Lawmakers hold Town Hall forums

State House Reps. Ruth Kagi, D-Lake Forest Park, and Maralyn Chase, D-Edmonds, plan to hold two Town Hall Meetings on Saturday, March 22 to speak to constituents about this Legislative session and give the public a chance to speak to them.

The first meeting will be at 10 a.m. at the Shoreline Historical Museum. The second will be at at 2 p.m. at Lake Forest Park’s Third Place Books.

LFP, bicycle club selling helmets

The city of Lake Forest Park and the Cascade Bike Club will be providing $8 bicycle helmets and fittings between 3 and 6 p.m. on Tuesday March 25 at Third Place Commons.

The city has a new ordinance that requires all bike riders to wear helmets while riding on public streets, parks and trails in Lake Forest Park, city officials said.

“We know bike helmets save lives and we are eager to make helmets available to everyone at a moderate cost,” Mayor Dave Hutchison said.

Grace Cole Park

will be expanded

Lake Forest Park City Council at its March 13 meeting authorized the expansion of a park dedicated to the memory of State Rep. Grace Cole.

The council authorized the city to purchase a 1.7-acre property with a stream running through it that joins the Grace Cole Nature Park with city-owned property that was formerly the Briercrest neighborhood site. The property will be purchased for $78,000. For the purchase, $50,000 will come from the King County Conservation Futures Fund, and $28,000 would come from Lake Forest Park’s 2003 capital budget for the Grace Cole Nature Park.

The property contains sensitive areas, wetlands and steep slopes and is entirely contained within a drainage basin.

Grace Cole was a member of the Shoreline School Board and represented the 32nd District in the state House of Representatives for 16 years. She passed away in 2001.

Hopelink needs

literacy volunteers

Hopelink will conduct an orientation for literacy volunteers from 7-8:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 1 at Hopelink’s Bellevue center. Hopelink’s Literacy Program offers free literacy assistance to adults in north and east King County. Volunteers are needed for basic literacy tutors, English-as-a-Second Language group leaders, GED tutors and general office support. Training is provided. For more information call 425-643-1912.

Scald prevention kits are available

The Shoreline Fire Department is providing free scald prevention kits for families, sponsored by the Northwest Burn Foundation. The kit warns families to make sure water temperatures are at a safe level for children, and teaches how to avoid serious burn injuries in the home. Call 206-533-6564 to receive a free safety kit by leave a name, address and phone number so the kit can be mailed.

LFP police help Special Olympics

The Lake Forest Park Police Department is raising funds for the 2003 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. in 2002, police departments nation-wide raised $15 million to support Special Olympics, of which Lake Forest Park Police contributed over $2,000 raised from the police’s annual dunk tank and raffle event at Picnic in the Park.

Shoreline sets citizens academy

The Shoreline Police Department, together with the King County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a Citizen’s Academy, a program to increase understanding between citizens and the police department through education to give citizens a better understanding of the law enforcement role in the criminal justice system, and an appreciation for the many challenges facing law enforcement in today’s complex society.

The academy is limited to residents of Shoreline, or those who work in Shoreline. Classes will be 6-9 p.m., Tuesdays, March 25-May 27 at the King County Sheriff’s Office Precinct 2 in Kenmore. Class size is limited and will be filled on first come, first serve basis. Applications are available at the main Shoreline police station and city neighborhood storefronts. There is no cost.
