City calls on artists for Rec Center project

The City of Lynnwood is seeking an artist or artist team to create site-specific artwork for the new Lynnwood Recreation Center.

Funding for the public art commission is part of Lynnwood’s One Percent for the Arts program. Several exterior sites or “zones” for public art have been identified by the city near the Center’s front entrance.

Artists residing in Washington and Oregon are eligible to apply. The art budget is $130,000. Deadline for application is Oct. 5. The City of Lynnwood has hired 4Culture to help manage the selection process. Artists can apply at www.4culture.org.

MLT Library has English class

ESL Talk Time begins again at the Mountlake Terrace Library on Friday, Sept. 11, continuing on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10 a.m.

Talk Time is an opportunity for adults who are learning English to practice speaking English with each other in a casual environment. A trained ESL instructor will be on hand to give input and keep the conversation going.

Meetings are free and drop-ins welcome.

3-Day Walk to go through county

The 2009 Seattle Breast Cancer 3-Day course will be routed through south Snohomish County Sept. 11–13.

Community members not walking are encouraged to support the thousands of walkers and volunteer crew members at the opening or closing ceremonies or by being at the local cheering stations listed below.

Golf tournaments fund good causes

Ÿ The Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild will hold the third annual Sydney Coxon Memorial Golf Tournament and silent auction/dinner on Sept. 12 at Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett. Sponsored by Integrated Technologies Inc., all proceeds will support brain tumor research at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

PPD was founded by three classmates in memory of their friend who died at age 11 of a brain tumor. Since its founding in 2006, PPD has raised more than $100,000 for brain cancer research.

Church celebrates 50 years

Mountlake Terrace Christian Church has been meeting as a body since 1959. Nursery offers fall classes

Tulips, daffodils, crocus and much more can enhance your garden. Bulbs are great planted in masses, along borders, underneath trees and even in pots. Now is the time to plant bulbs for spring color. Wight’s Home &Garden will hold a session at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 12 on how to grow bulbs successfully.

Public enrichment classes begin

The City of Lynnwood Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department offers a variety of classes and programs this fall. Just a few of the offerings starting this September teach how to buy and sell online, drawing, crochet basics, guitar, hip hop dance, silversmithing, line dancing, sculpture in glass, swing dance and watercolor painting.

Library offers free computer classes

Need help with your computer and Internet skills? Learn how to use a mouse, the basics of the Internet and how to manage your library account in free classes beginning Saturday, Sept. 12, and continuing through December at the Mountlake Terrace Library.

This series of classes is aimed at the beginner. The first in the series will teach how to use a mouse and move around the Web (this class, or mouse skills, required for subsequent classes). The other classes will focus on how to find Web sites on the Internet and how to use the Sno-Isle Web page efficiently. Classes are limited and pre-registration is required.

End tool abuse

Tools used for the wrong purpose, left in the rain, or put away dirty where the metal rusts and wooden handles weaken — protect your investment and learn about tool care at the WSU Garden Tool Series, Tuesdays, Sept. 15, 22 and 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Washington State University Extension in the Education Center at McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett.

WSU Master Gardeners will share their tool tips and guide you through repair and sharpening techniques.

“Most gardeners don’t have a clue about tool care, but it’s an investment worth protecting” said Sharon Collman, WSU Snohomish County Extension educator.

Sessions include choosing the right tools, tool maintenance and small engine repair.

Seasonal flu shots available

Clinics and stores across the area are offering seasonal flu vaccinations.

Bartell Drugs is among businesses offering special vaccination programs, with many stores also offering shots by appointment or on a walk-in basis.

Weekend MBA program offered

Western Washington University’s College of Business and Economics will host an information session on its new Weekend MBA Program at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at the University Center of North Puget Sound, 2000 Tower St., Gray Wolf Hall Room 160 in Everett.

The WWU program is designed for active managers and professionals who are seeking career advancement, upward mobility and job security. The program will begin Jan. 8 and meet every other weekend on Fridays and Saturdays.

The program features small class sizes. The priority application deadline is Oct. 16 and the final deadline is Nov. 16. Potential applicants are encouraged to begin the testing and application process now.

Streamkeeper has family events

The Adopt-A-Stream Foundation and Snohomish County Parks &Recreation have plans for several family-oriented educational events beginning Sept. 10. Topics range from cougars to wetland wigglers to killer whales, owls and woodpeckers.

Sessions are suitable for grade-schoolers through adults.
