Trail boardwalk work is approved

The Mill Creek City Council approved a bid to install a 300-foot extension of the boardwalk at North Creek Park on Tuesday, March 28, but the vote was not unanimous.

By a 5-1 margin, with Mary Kay Voss opposing and Dale Hensley absent, the Council approved the $94,765 bid to McClure and Sons of Mill Creek.

Voss opposed the contract because she said the contract fails to address the real problem in the area, which is flooding caused by beavers damming nearby North Creek. Because of the beavers, interim public works director Scott Smith said, the trail is constantly wet and muddy.

McClure and Sons bid significantly below the estimated $145,000 because the project will come during a slow work time and the company is willing to reduce its profit margin in order to keep its employees working, Smith said.

The boardwalk extension begins at the park’s north end, located at the south end of 9th Avenue SE. The work is being paid for by a state grant.

New public works director is named

Mill Creek city manager Steve Nolen announced during Tuesday’s meeting that the city has hired a new public works director.

Cmdr. Tim Burns is retiring from the U.S. Navy later this year. His resume includes working as the public works director at Whidbey Naval Air Station in Oak Harbor. Burns will begin working for Mill Creek at the end of July.
