County offers tourism grants
Snohomish County is currently accepting applications from public and nonprofit agencies for projects that promote tourism and overnight stays in the county.
Funds for the grants are gathered through the revenue collected from lodging room rentals in Snohomish County. The grants will be available January 2011 and will be awarded on a competitive basis to eligible projects. Historically, the average project allocation has been about $5,000.
Details of eligibility and other program requirements are available by contacting the Snohomish County Economic Development Division at 3000 Rockefeller Ave., M/S #411, Everett, or by e-mailing Wendy Becker at wendy.becker@snoco.org.
Completed applications are due by 5 p.m. Sept. 27.
Million Mile driver
Mike Majors wanted to be a professional driver back in the mid-1990s when he saw an ad for coach operators with Community Transit. He applied, was hired and completed his training almost 14 years ago.
Now he has reached an important milestone as a Million Mile Driver for CT, signifying he has driven the National Safety Council’s standard for 1 million miles without a preventable accident. That’s the equivalent of nearly 42 trips around the Earth without so much as scraping a mirror on a tree branch.
Majors is currently driving routes in South Snohomish County.
Community Transit has 69 active Million Mile Drivers, including six active Two Million Mile Drivers. Million Mile Drivers receive uniform patches, a special jacket and a plaque recognizing their accomplishment. They also have a bus named in their honor.

High-tech I-5 signs go live
Engineers activated a high-tech traffic management system along northbound I-5 in south Seattle Aug. 10.
Overhead electronic signs now automatically alert drivers to change lanes when an incident blocks traffic or to adjust their speed before reaching slower-moving traffic. The new signs are intended to reduce rear-end collisions, allow for earlier escape to alternate routes and smooth lane shifting caused by incidents like stalls or collisions.

MLT awarded electric vehicle stations
Mountlake Terrace has been awarded 10 electric vehicle charging stations to be installed upon approval by Community Transit at the Transit Center, near I-5 and 236th Street Southwest.
The special charging stations are intended to help reduce greenhouse gases. They are valued at $52,000 – part of a grant from ChargePoint America, funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Department of Energy.
The greater Seattle area is targeted for early release of an all-electric car, the Nissan Leaf. Another electric car, the Chevrolet Volt, is due for release this year as well.
MLT neighborhood names sought
Mountlake Terrace is looking for ideas for re-naming two neighborhood districts (now called “East Terrace” and “North Terrace”). The effort is being made to consider more unique or place-based names for these two neighborhoods as other neighborhood districts do.
Residents are asked to fill out an informal survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/MLTNeighborhoods. For a copy of the questionnaire, or to otherwise send in ideas, e-mail Neighborhoods@ci.mlt.wa.us or call 425-744-6266. The survey lists some name options that reflect earlier ideas from the community. These include “Cedar Way” and “Lyon Creek Neighborhood” for the neighborhood now known as East Terrace and “Meadow Heights” and “Woodlark” for the neighborhood now known as North Terrace.
