Bus service cuts, fair hike effective June 13

On June 13, Community Transit will no longer operate bus service on Sundays and major holidays. The Sunday suspension is part of a package of cuts aimed at saving $16 million over two years as the transit agency seeks to recover from low sales tax revenues brought on by the recession.

Other cuts include reduced commuter service to Seattle, fewer early morning and late night trips when ridership is low, and revised routing that eliminates some neighborhood loops. Local bus fares were raised earlier this month to help bring additional revenue.

Bus riders are advised to call the Volunteers of America social services hotline at 211 for assistance with transportation on Sundays.

In addition to Sundays, Community Transit will suspend all bus service on six major holidays. The first major holiday without service will be Independence Day. Because the holiday falls on a Sunday this year and is officially recognized on July 5, there will be no bus service on either July 4 or July 5.

Complete schedules for service after June 13 are available at www.communitytransit.org and on board buses.

4th of July grant quest

The Edmonds Chamber is in the running for a $10,000 grant to support the 4th of July Celebration, including the parade, evening program and fireworks show. From now until June 14, Liberty Mutual is hosting a contest allowing towns across America to compete for $10,000 Bring Back the 4th grants. Log on to www.BringBackThe4th.com and take a short trivia quiz on people and events that have shaped our nation to put Edmonds into the running for one of 10 grants.

Each completed quiz counts as one credit. Credits are earned by completion, not by quiz score.

The 10 U.S. towns with the highest quiz participation will be eligible to win a grant.

Bartell Drugs has launched the “Stock the Pantry” food drive for Northwest Harvest by accepting nonperishable food donations at all Bartell’s locations through June 13. Some “kid-friendly” food item suggestions include tuna, instant oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, cheese crackers, applesauce and canned fruit in individual serving sizes.

TOP Food &Drug stores is also offering a 5 percent discount on grocery items each Tuesday now through July 6 to customers with military identification. This includes active-duty service members, spouses and retired service members.

Alcohol and tobacco products, lottery tickets, gift cards and stamps are among the items ineligible for the discount. Customers may ask for details at a store’s Guest Services counter or visit www.Top-Foods.com.

Evergreen wins awards

Evergreen Hospital Medical Center recently won three awards; two for dedication to improving the environment and one for a television advertisement.

The Diamond Award for Organizational Leadership from Commuter Challenge in King County was given for the hospital’s highly effective trip reduction program. Evergreen Hospital Medical Center encourages employees to join vanpools, take a bus, share a ride, bike or walk to work.

Evergreen received the Partner for Change designation from Practice Greenhealth, a national organization that promotes clean energy, energy efficiency and reducing pollution in the healthcare setting. Only two Washington hospitals received the distinction acknowledging using less toxic products, recycling, purchasing organic foods and increasing energy efficiency.
