Engineering award to local firm

HWA GeoSciences, Inc., of Lynnwood, is a finalist in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ 44th annual Engineering Excellence Awards competition for providing geotechnical engineering services for the Brightwater Marine Outfall project in Edmonds.

The project is among 163 engineering projects from throughout the nation that are being recognized as preeminent engineering achievements. Awards will be presented Tuesday, April 27, in Washington, D.C.

Event logistics awarded to Edmonds group

BTI Events will provide logistical support for the World University Games and World University Championships through 2015 as part of a new partnership. The World University Games, also known as the Universiade, is one of the largest international sports competitions in the world. BTI Events’ first task is to help with the selection and support of teams for the 2011 Winter and Summer Games.

BTI Events is a subsidiary of Edmonds-based Basketball Travelers Inc., a company that organizes international and domestic basketball tours and tournaments for NCAA universities, high schools and foreign club and national teams.

Dunn Lumber honored

AtWork! has named the Dunn Lumber Company as the recipient of its Supporter of the Year Award. Dunn Lumber will be honored at AtWork!’s Benefit Breakfast on March 25th, at the Bellevue Westin Hotel. In naming Dun Lumber, AtWork! CEO, Chris Brandt said, “Dunn Lumber has always been an organization that recognizes that it takes more than lumber and nails to build a community. They are proud to help their employees with disabilities increase their independence and enhance their quality of life.” The breakfast is free to attendees with a suggested minimum contribution of $150. AtWork! is a private non-profit company based in Bellevue, that provides employment services to people with disabilities learn marketable skills.

Name the next new ferry

As construction gets underway of a new 64-car ferry the Transportation Commission wants to hear ideas for its name from people across the state now through April 30th. Final selection of the name will occur at the Commission’s July meeting in Olympia.

Of the 23 vessels currently operating in Puget Sound, 21 have names reflecting the state’s tribal heritage. The other two are named the Rhododendron and the Evergreen State.

CT surplus auction

Retired Community Transit vans and mini-buses will be put up for public auction Saturday, March 20, at the James G. Murphy auction yard in Kenmore, 18226 68th Ave. NE. The auction begins at 9 a.m.

Vehicles will be available for preview from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, March 19, at the James G. Murphy auction yard.

As part of CT’s Van GO van grant program, non-profit groups can apply to receive one of 12 surplus vehicles to use in meeting community transportation needs. Groups receiving Van GO vehicles will be required to fill out paperwork and provide usage reports during their first year using the vehicle. Applications are due April 30, with vehicles to be presented in June. More information about Van GO is available at www.communitytransit.org/vango.

Friends of Edmonds Library meet

Strom Peterson, owner of The Resident Cheesemonger in downtown Edmonds will be the guest speaker for the Friends of the Edmonds Library meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 25, in the Plaza Room of the Library. Peterson will address “All About Cheese.” Come expand your knowledge about cheese and enjoy a few samples as well.

MLT Citizens Academy

The City of Mountlake Terrace Police Department is hosting the Police Citizens Academy on Wednesday nights from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Mountlake Terrace Library, 23300 58th Avenue W. The free 12-week program begins April 14 and runs through June 30. The deadline to apply for the Police Citizens Academy is 5 p.m. March 31. Space is limited to the first 30 people accepted.
