Groups step up for Haitian relief
The following South County businesses and organizations are participating in relief efforts for victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
PCC Natural Markets has donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross. The grocery chain has a store in Edmonds.
Burlington Coat Factory in Edmonds is accepting donations that will be given to the American Red Cross to support emergency efforts. Donations will be collected through Feb. 17.
TOP Food &Drug stores in Snohomish County are collecting donations to fund World Vision’s relief efforts in Haiti. Customers may make donations of any amount at TOP Food check stands through Feb. 9. • Evergreen Bank seized
Seattle-based Evergreen Bank was seized by federal regulators Jan. 22. The seven branches, including one in Lynnwood, were taken over by Oregon-based Umpqua Bank and reopened under that banner Jan. 25. Umpqua had two branches previously, one in Bellevue and one in Kent.
• 9/11 survivor addresses symposium
Lt. Col. (Ret.) Brian Birdwell will speak at the Edmonds-based Financial Planning Association of Puget Sound’s 2010 Annual Symposium Jan. 29 at Bell Harbor International Conference Center, Seattle. FPA is the nonprofit membership organization for the financial planning community.
Birdwell will share his story of hope, faith, patriotism and unconditional love to help financial planners understand the emotions clients face during decision-making processes. It is hope that kept him alive in the wake of the 9/11 Pentagon attack, when the flames consumed 60 percent of his body. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

EXECUTIVE CHANGES
Three local men have returned to Snohomish County to pursue their law professions, recently joining Edmonds-based Zachor &Thomas. Each of the new hires passed the state bar exam on their first try.
James M. Zachor graduated in 1998 from Mountlake Terrace High School. He attended Oregon State University, transferring to Pacific University before attending law school at Thomas Cooley Law School in Lansing, Mich., where he graduated cum laude.
Joseph Douglas Everett graduated in 1998 from Mountlake Terrace High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington and attended law school at Gonzaga Law School, graduating cum laude.
K. Peter Palubicki graduated from Cascade High School in 2002 and attended University of Washington Law School, graduating cum laude.

Leadership Snohomish County is offering “Community Board Leadership Training,” an in-depth course on board service and leadership, from 4:15 to 8:15 p.m. Feb. 23. This training is for those serving on a nonprofit board. It is also an excellent training for someone who is curious and wants to learn more about serving on a nonprofit board. South County officials are returning to the Community Transit Board of Directors.
Lynnwood City Council President Ted Hikel returns to the Community Transit Board of Directors after serving as an alternate for the past two years. Hikel served as a regular member from 2006 to 2008. Previous board members Mill Creek Mayor Mike Todd and Mountlake Terrace Mayor Jerry Smith are also returning. Edmonds City Council President Steve Bernheim remains as an alternate.
The CT board is comprised of two representatives from the Snohomish County Council; two representatives from large cities, with more than 30,000 residents, such as Lynnwood and Edmonds; three representatives from medium-sized cities, with 10,000 to 30,000 residents, including Mill Creek and Mountlake Terrace; and two from small cities, with fewer than 10,000 residents.
