July Fourth festivities in Edmonds will include a 5k run/walk. Registration by June 25 is preferred.
The sixth annual “An Edmonds Kind of 4th” 5k Run/Walk will start at 10 a.m. at the City Park at Third and Walnut and finish along the parade route. Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $25.
Proceeds benefit the Fourth of July celebration, which also includes a children’s parade, main parade and evening mini-concert and fireworks.

• The Lynnwood Chamber’s After Hours group will hold an informal meet-and-greet with two candidates facing each other for a position on the Snohomish County Superior Court: Jack Follis and Millie Judge. The event is set for 5-6:30 p.m. June 21 at Fairwinds-Brighton Court, 6520 196th St. SW.
• PLC Insurance in Lynnwood is offering to shred your unwanted paperwork for free. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. June 23 in the company’s parking lot, 4211 Alderwood Mall Blvd., Lynnwood. Professionals will shred your documents on-site. Pins, staples, fasteners, floppy disks and CD-ROMs also can be shredded. No hanging files, ring binders or hard drives. The public is limited to four storage boxes per person.
• The public is invited to help build an 8-foot-tall Lego sculpture of Yoda during the Lego store grand opening June 22-24 at Alderwood mall. The hours are 11 a.m.- 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. -6 p.m. Sunday. There will be goodies, too. The Lego store is located in the Center Court of the mall, 3000 184th St. SW, Lynnwood.
• Bartell Drugs’ Edmonds store, 23028 100th Ave. W, unveiled a new interior look June 16 that highlights five key product areas with lighting, signage and furnishings. Edmonds-Woodway High School students handed out food and provided entertainment for the event.

Duncan promoted to commander
Mountlake Terrace Police Chief Greg Wilson administered the oath of office June 4 to new police Cmdr. Don Duncan. Duncan has been with the department since 1996.
Duncan and his wife, Sarah, have twin sons, who are sergeants in the U.S. Army and have just returned from serving four tours of duty in Afghanistan. Duncan also is an accomplished musician; he is a member of a country western band Bullet Creek, which has performed at National Night Out. His mother, Cora, sews the patches on the department’s uniforms.

• Traci Herman, an administrative assistant for the Mountlake Terrace city manager, received her professional certified municipal clerk designation from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. Herman also is acting city clerk and manages the City Council’s meeting materials and records programs.
• Snohomish County has partnered with Puget Sound Cooperative Credit Union to launch a new Energy Smart loan program for Snohomish County homeowners doing energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, including windows and doors, insulation, heat pumps and solar system installations. • At the end of June, there will be nighttime lane closures of 196th Street Southwest between Highway 99 and Scriber Lake Road to finish the ongoing road improvements, including a widened roadway with new turn lanes. • Quadrant Homes, a subsidiary of Weyerhaeuser Real Estate Company, and the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund have issued a call for grant applicants in two areas: nonprofit organizations with a focus on youth or the elderly, and local food banks. • Applications for Mountlake Terrace’s 2012 Comprehensive Plan amendments are due by 4:30 p.m. June 29. The Comprehensive Plan is a 20-year plan that guides the city’s livability. • Over the next several months residents may notice Sound Transit project staff conducting field observation and testing in neighborhoods along the I-5 corridor between Northgate and Lynnwood for the Lynnwood Link Extension project. No disruptions are anticipated.
• Clark County administrator Peter Mayer will be the new deputy director of Snohomish Health District starting July 9. The deputy director serves as COO and assists the health officer with operations, including budget development and long-range planning. Mayer was chosen from a field of 33 national applicants.
• Snohomish County PUD has been honored by the Bonneville Power Administration with its 2012 Award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency for the utility’s success with conservation programs and innovation. In addition, the PUD’s Youngs Creek hydropower project received a “2012 Honor Award” from the Seattle Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
