Senior Danielle Clauson set a 1A tri-district meet record in the javelin and qualified for state in three events to lead the King’s girls to their 13th consecutive district title May 18-19 at Woolsey Stadium.
The King’s boys, led by Josh Fuller’s victories in the 100, 200 and 400 meters and his contribution in the winning 1,600 relay, won their seventh straight district title.
Twelve King’s boys athletes and 14 King’s girl athletes will represent the Knights at the state 1A meet May 25-26 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The top five girls and top four boys in each event moved on from the tri-district meet to state.
The King’s boys team has a shot to win the team title with Zillah another favorite, King’s coach Daunte Gouge said.
Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) is the team to beat on the girls side, Gouge said.
Clauson broke Sara Mosiman’s school and meet record with a throw of 135 feet, 4 inches in the javelin. She also won the shot put with a throw of 34 feet and the discus with a throw of 122-7.
Fuller won the 400 in a school record of 49.86 seconds. He broke the mark of 50.04 set by Brad Thompson in 1979 and matched by current King’s football coach Jim Shapiro in 1990. He also won the 100 in a time of 11.2 seconds and the 200 in 22.55.
The Knights’ 1,600-relay team of Bryan Ayers, Austin Dean, Tony Yakovich and Fuller won with a time of 3:30.09. The Knights’ 400 relay of Ayers, Jean Blatchford, Jonathan Blauert and Yakovich finished third in a time of 45.03 to earn a state berth.
On the girls side, the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays all qualified for state.
“All three of our girls relays ran really well,” Gouge said.
The 400 relay of Mariah Louie, Megan Northey, Erin Bremond and Kim Mayhle finished third in a time of 52.15. The 800 relay of Bremond, Northey, Olivia Thomas and Mayhle won with a time of 1:45.78. The 1,600 relay of Bremond, Northey, Hillary Quinn and Thomas won with a time of 4:08.92.
In the girls running events, Thomas won the 800 in a time of 2:21.25 and Northey finished fourth in 2:23.22.
•King’s Beka Lampe finished third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.79 seconds.
•Mayhle took second in the 100 in 12.99.
•Thomas finished second to rival Lizzie Jewson of Charles Wright in the 1,600 with a time of 5:19.48.
•Quinn finished fourth in the 400 with a time of 1:02.14. Louie finished third in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.97.
In the girls field events, Mayhle took third in the long jump, leaping 17-3.
•Jana Jack took second in the high jump clearing 4-8.
•Three Knights, Megan Crosby, Julie Young and Sarah Blatchford, made it to state in the pole vault clearing 9 feet, the third-best height at the meet.
•Bremond took fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 33-0 and Louie was fifth in 32-6.
In the boys running events, King’s Sean Brugger and Raymond Zhang tied for fourth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.47.
•Jeff Dull finished second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:27.78 and his twin brother, Evan Dull, took fourth in 4:30.2.
•Jeff Dull finished second in the 3,200 in 9:59.37 and Evan Dull took fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:01.17.
In the boys field events, Victor Swanson won the discus with a throw of 144-8 and took first in the shot put with a heave of 49-0.5.
•Blauert won the high jump clearing 6-2.
•Yakovich was second in the triple jump with a leap of 44-0 and John Burley took fourth, jumping 41-5.5. Yakovich set the school record of 44-10.5 at the Cascade Conference meet, breaking Charlie Waldburger’s mark by 2.5 inches.
•Blauert finished third in the long jump, leaping 20-7.5, and Yakovich was fourth, also jumping 20-7.5.
•Alex Lehman finished third in the javelin with a throw of 156-6.
