If you have stuff cluttering your closets and garage, this is the time of year to get rid of it.

On the next two Saturdays a variety of events are taking place in the Mill Creek area that epitomize the cliché about spring cleaning.

It begins all day tomorrow with the spring edition of the Mill Creek Garage Sale, an event that ranks among the city’s longest-running traditions as well as being the largest event in town.

It can even be argued that the garage sale, which takes place in neighborhoods throughout town, is also the city’s biggest tourist draw. Just ask Carol Morris of Burnaby, British Columbia, who has been coming to the sale for four years and this year is bringing two friends with her.

“Everyone is so friendly and Mill Creek sellers have such awesome prices and unique things,” Morris said. “I remember one year a fella in a pickup truck with a barbecue on the back was driving around selling hot dogs and pop. It was great, especially when you are hungry and starting to get thirsty as well.”

The event takes place twice a year. The other sale takes place the first Saturday in October.

Next week, after resident’s clean their homes of old items, they can get rid of hazardous items at the first household hazardous materials roundup to take place in the city of Mill Creek.

A project of Mayor Pro-tem Donna Michelson, the event is taking place in conjunction with Snohomish County Public Works and the city of Mill Creek. It is not costing the city of Mill Creek any money to host the event. The county holds such events in various cities each year.

“I’m very excited to have a household hazardous waste mobile site in our city,” Michelson said. “I believe this will motivate citizens to do the right thing by disposing of the hazardous household items conveniently and legally. I hope to see a great turnout.”

People can bring a variety of household hazardous materials, up to 20 gallons, to be disposed of. Items include automotive chemicals, paints and pesticides.

In addition, for a fee, people can dispose of broken or outdated electronics, such as computers, televisions and stereos.

Items like medical waste, asbestos and explosives may not be disposed at the event, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 14 in the parking lot at Mill Creek City Hall, 15728 Main St.
