Comcast awards E-W graduate

Paulina Garcia, a class of 2009 graduate from Edmonds-Woodway High School, has been awarded a $1,000 grant from Comcast’s “Leaders and Achievers” program.

Garcia, who will be attending Seattle Pacific University in the fall with plans to major in medicine, was an active member of both her school and community. She won the scholarship through her participation in Relay for Life at Edmonds-Woodway and her volunteering at Stevens Hospital. She is one of 72 other students in the state who received received this scholarship.

The Comcast Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program selects students “who strive to achieve their potential, who are catalysts for positive change in their communities, who are involved in their schools, and who serve as models for their fellow students.” Recipients of the scholarship are rewarded with this one-time $1,000 grant.

The grant came from the Comcast Foundation, which was founded in 1999 to provide charitable support for non-profit organizations. To date, the Foundation has donated more than $64 million nationwide.

City board seeks applicants

The Edmonds City Council recently created the Citizens Economic Development Commission to address issues relating to economic development.

The commission has several objectives. It will aim to design strategies for economic development within the city and find new sources of income, among other tasks. The commission will also work with the Planning Board to review possible economic development strategies. The commission will be in effect through Dec. 31, 2010.

Commission members must live inside city limits to be considered for appointment. Each councilmember may appoint two members while the mayor can appoint three.

Application forms are available at the reception desk in City Hall, located at 121 Fifth Ave. N. Individuals can also call 425-771-0247 to receive an application in the mail. All applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30.

Transportation draft revealed

The City of Edmonds will be hosting an open house on Tuesday, June 30 to present the newest draft of the its Transportation Plan. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. and conclude by 7:30 p.m. Edmonds is updating the transportation element of its Comprehensive Plan which has identified all future multimodal transportation projects. The plan will be presented at 6 p.m. along with potential funding strategies.

The public is invited to attend and provide input for the different transportation projects and funding methods proposed by the city.

The open house will be in the Brackett Room on the third floor of City Hall.

Garden contest extends deadline

The Edmonds in Bloom Garden Celebration committee has extended their entry deadline for the garden competition to Friday, July 3. Garden judges may also apply until this same date.

Judges will be visiting gardens from Thursday, July 9 through Wednesday, July 15. The awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, July 30 at 7 p.m. at the Edmonds Center for the Arts.

Gardeners wishing to enter the competition can pick up entry forms at several locations, including the Edmonds Library, the Frances Anderson Center, Garden Gear, the Log Cabin and Bountiful Home. Completed forms should be dropped off at the Frances Anderson Center. Applicants can also enter online by visiting www.edmondsinbloom.com.
