Mountlake Terrace tree-lighting
An annual Mountlake Terrace tradition, the lighting of the City’s tree on top of the Water Tower, will start at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Evergreen Playfield, 22205 56th Ave W.
Warm beverages and cookies will be served at 6 p.m. and music by The Flashbacks starts at 6:30 p.m. Brier Elementary School students will sing holiday carols at 7 p.m. followed by the tree lighting and a visit from Santa Claus.
Installation of the tree on top of the 145-foot tower at Jack Long Park, with over 900 light bulbs, was no easy task. This year the job was completed as part of a joint training exercise with employees from the City’s Police Department, Fire District 1, and the City’s Public Works Department.
The tree-lighting ceremony is sponsored by the Terrace-Brier Lions Club led by Mayor Jerry Smith and his wife, Judi. Be sure to dress warm because no matter the weather conditions, the show will go on.
Filipino celebration set for Dec. 17
The Filipino-American community of Lynnwood is organizing an arts festival and is seeking volunteers, sponsors, artists and donations. The festive event to celebrate Filipino arts, dance, history and music, is set for 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Lynnwood Convention Center.

Job’s Daughters set holiday luncheon
Bethel #5 Job’s Daughters of Edmonds will host its annual Holiday Luncheon the first Saturday in December at the Terrace View Presbyterian Church, 4700 228th St. SW., Mountlake Terrace. Proceeds will benefit the Job’s Daughters.

St. Vincent de Paul starts a toy drive
St. Vincent de Paul of Snohomish County needs toys for children. They have a long list to fill for deserving, but needy boys and girls.

Golf course grill reopens in Terrace
Lakeview Grill at Ballinger Golf Course, the municipal golf course of Mountlake Terrace, recently opened. For the winter, the grill will be open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays and will serve a limited menu.
Tyrone and Carol Hardy, known as Hardy Golf, signed a lease with the city and reopened the golf course in September.
Korean food festival and cooking contest
TASTE OF KOREA, a food festival, features a Korean cooking contest especially for non-Koreans. A prize list, worth a total of $2,900, is being offered. The event is set for 1-4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Morning Star Korean Cultural Center, 15206 18th Ave. W., Lynnwood.

HomeStreet Bank “Clothes for Kids”
The Mountlake Terrace branch of HomeStreet Bank will host a clothing drive to benefit “Clothes for Kids.” The branch encourages people to donate new socks and underwear during the month of December.
On December 21, the branch will offer free photos with Santa Claus. People are encouraged to bring donations for Clothes for Kids when they come to have their photo taken with Santa.
The clothing drive is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday until Dec. 30, at HomeStreet Bank, Mountlake Terrace branch, 22001 66th Ave. W., Mountlake Terrace. Santa photos are set for 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 21. For information, call (425) 771-8000.
Founded in 1984, Clothes for Kids provides quality new and “like new” free clothing and shoes to children of low-income families. Clothes for Kids, which serves about 1,600 children each year, is staffed by volunteers who sort, wash and stock the clothing donations.
Food bank aided by chambers’ efforts
The South Snohomish County Chamber of Commerce (SSCCC) is collecting donation for the Lynnwood Food Bank.
Donations of non-perishable food will continue to be accepted at chamber’s office, located at 3815 196th St. SW, Ste. 136 in Lynnwood, through Dec. 20. The food bank’s dedicated volunteer staff also collects and allocates toys during the Christmas season.
Serving an average of 1,040 households each month, the Lynnwood Food Bank distributes more than 934,559 pounds of food annually to low-income families.

Boy Scouts collect, recycle x-mas trees
In the city of Lynnwood, Boy Scout troops will be out collecting resident’s Christmas trees on three different days around the turn of the year. The collection dates are: Saturday, Dec. 31, Saturday, Jan. 7, and Sunday, Jan. 8.
Look for tree-cycling flyers distributed in your neighborhood mid-December for more information. The scouts will also staff a drop-off site for residents wanting to recycle their tree.
Check the flyer for location or call the City’s Recycling Coordinator at 425-670-8302. Remember that donations to the troops for providing this great community service go to support next year’s Scout activities.
Food needed for homeless families
Pathways for Women YWCA is experiencing a shortage of non-perishable food items to fill emergency food boxes for homeless families. They are seeking hearty soups, canned meats, box dinners, Jell-O gelatin and pudding, canned chili, dried or flaked potatoes, cereal, honey, bake mixes, peanut butter, jams and jellies, dry beverages (i.e., hot chocolate, instant coffee), popcorn, candy, snack foods and gift cards to local grocery stores for purchasing perishable food. All donations are tax deductible.

Catholic Community Services seeks drivers for transporting clients to and from doctor’s appointments and the like. Clients are able to get in and out by themselves. Help your neighbor maintain an independent lifestyle. Drive every day or schedule to fit your free time.
Mileage reimbursement provided. You must be over 21, have insurance, a valid drivers license and a safe running vehicle. This is a volunteer position.

MS group
looks for help
MS Helping Hands is collecting dolls and stuffed animal donations to send to the children of the hurricane survivors for Christmas. The group currently have about 100. Good people can help Lynnwood cops
The Lynnwood Police Department’s Volunteers in Public Safety (VIPS) is recruiting. VIPS are local, active men and women who are typically retired, to help their community and have some fun.
Among other activities, the VIPS are responsible for the City’s free house check service. When residents plan on being away from their homes for a time, they can sign up at the police station for VIPS to make daily checks on their homes.
VIPS are uniformed civilians who drive Crime Prevention police patrol cars and assist the department in a variety of ways. Police volunteers assisted those who have locked themselves out of their vehicles; they’ve directed traffic at car accidents, and helped people who’ve run out of gas.
