Winter solstice celebration

The City Cantabile Choir, directed by Frederick N. West, will be featured at the Winter Solstice Celebration at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at the Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 14724 First Ave. NE. in Shoreline. Volunteers needed for South Woods

South Woods Preservation Group invites volunteers to help eradicate invasive ivy from South Woods from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17 at South Woods, located at 150th and 25th NE. Bring work gloves and clipping tools. Food and beverages will be provided.

At noon, naturalist Richard Tinsley will provide a nature tour for newcomers to learn about native species, which counts as a community service credit.

Northshore Fire toy drive

The Northshore Fire Department, which serves Lake Forest Park and Kenmore, has teamed up with Hopelink, in Bothell, to collect toys for the children in the community this holiday season. Residents can help to make this a special Christmas for local children by bringing new, unwrapped toys to either fire station.

Fire station headquarters is located at 18030 73rd Ave. NE. in Kenmore, behind St. Vincent De Paul’s. The other fire station is located at 17020 Brookside Blvd. NE in Lake Forest Park, behind Albertson’s. Donations will be accepted between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Dec. 24. LED holiday lighting contest

Shoreline Solar Project is sponsoring a LED holiday lighting contest to help resident make the switch from incandescent holiday lights to new LED holiday lights, which use up to 99 percent less electricity than incandescent bulbs and save money. The most impressive display will win $100.

Stipulations of the contest:

• Contest is open only to households in the city of Shoreline;

• Create a LED holiday lighting display using no more than 100 watts of electricity. You can power 2000 LED lights using less than 100 watts;

• Displays must be outdoors and visible from the street;

All entries must be received by Dec. 19. Judging will take place Dec. 19-20. Send an e-mail or standard mail with a description and optional picture of your display including any special features. Include name, address, e-mail, and day and evening telephone numbers. Indicate if the address may be listed on the Web site and press releases so others may view the display. Pensak honored by plant conservation

Lake Forest Park resident Caitlin Pensak received special recognition for her significant contributions to Washington Rare Plant Care and Conservation (Rare Care). Volunteering weekly at the Center for Urban Horticulture, Pensak devoted more than 130 hours of service during 2005.

She was honored for a wide variety of accomplishments, including scanning and organizing Rare Care’s image collection and cleaning and counting thousands of seeds for research and possible future restoration purposes. Pensak has also processed data gathered by other Rare Care volunteers who monitor rare plant populations throughout the state.
