Hunt on for best

NW businesses

The Better Business Bureau, together with U.S. Bank, is seeking nominations for Business of the Year awards.

In addition to best overall businesses, awards are offered for customer service, innovative business practices and community involvement.

Business owners and consumers may nominate businesses by visiting the Better Business Bureau website at www.thebbb.org. The deadline for nominations is August 24.

Winners will be announced on February 10, 2006 at the Westin Hotel in Seattle.

A pocket guide for identifying trees is available from the National Arbor Day Foundation.

The 84-page illustrated guide offers identifiers for 157 trees found in the West.

220th St. SW.

gets makeover

Construction begins Monday, July 11, on $4.3 million in improvements for 220th Street SW. in Edmonds.

Marshbank Construction, Inc. of Lake Stevens will take the lead in work that begins with clearing, grading and installation of underground storm drainage.

Additional plans include addition of bike lanes, sidewalks, traffic signals and a pedestrian-activated crossing at 96th Avenue W.

During construction, traffic will be detoured and drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes such as State Route 104, Bowdoin Way or Main Street.

Construction is expected to wrap up in the spring of 2006.

Historic group

needs members

Volunteers interested in historic preservation are being sought by the City of Edmonds for service on its Historic Preservation Commission.

The commission, which meets the second Thursday of the month at 3:30 p.m. in City Hall, identifies and encourages conservation of the city’s historic resources. Members are expected to demonstrate interest in the subject, impartiality and broad judgment.

Applications are available from the reception desk at City Hall or may be obtained by mail by calling 425-771-0247. The deadline for completed applications is 4:30 p.m., Friday, July 29.
