United Way seeks
Day of Caring help
Volunteers are needed for United Way of Snohomish County’s Day of Caring Friday, Sept. 16.
United Way is asking individuals to team with co-workers, family, neighbors and more than 1,000 other volunteers to complete projects such as painting, building, cleaning and reading to children.
Online registration for projects submitted by local non-profit organizations is being accepted at www.uwsc.org through Friday, Aug. 12.
Volunteers will receive a T-shirt designed by Emily Ford, a junior at Snohomish High School.

Elks name Stewart
to leadership role
David B. Steward of Edmonds has been named district deputy grand exalted ruler of the Washington State Elks Association’s North District.
He is a member of Lynnwood No. 2171 lodge of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
Stewart’s new role was announced earlier this month at the organization’s national convention in Reno, Nev.
Phone recycling aids shelter
The Snohomish County Center for Battered Women is collecting cell phones and other electronics to help victims of domestic violence. Even if they don’t have service, cell phones can be used to dial 911 Unwanted electronics may be dropped off at the New &Again Thrift Shoppe, 3116 Rucker Ave. in Everett or check the Web site at www.snococbw.org under “How to Help” for other locations in Snohomish County.
YWCA wins grant
to help homeless
A $382,000 grant to fund support services at the Edmonds Highlands transitional housing project over the next 10 years has been awarded the YWCA of Seattle-King County and Snohomish County.
The money is from The Washington Families Fund, a public/private partnership to expand housing services for the state’s homeless families. Grants totaling $2.6 million were awarded to programs in eight Washington counties.
The fund is supported by public dollars through the state’s Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development, and private sources such as The Boeing Company and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Cure for ‘mito’ goal of auction
The third annual “Cure for Mito” auction and dinner featuring wines from JM Cellars is set for Friday, Oct. 7, at the Willows Lodge in Woodinville.
Proceeds from the evening will launch a five-year plan by Dr. Russ Saneto and Children’s Hospital of Seattle for the hospital to become a center for excellence in mitochondrial research and patient care.
The hospital’s Mitochondrial Research Guild is sponsoring the event. Several Edmonds-area families are involved in the guild, which raises money for research on the disease that affects energy production.
