Battle of the barbecues set     

The public is invited to experience the battle of the barbecues as more than 20 members of the Pacific Northwest Barbecue Association (PNWBA) compete in the first annual “CJ Foods Battle of the Barbecues – Korean Style,” from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Shoreline Top Food &Drug store, located at 1201 N. 175th St. (near 175th and Aurora Avenue). Nearly a dozen teams will vie for Grand Champion status, with voting determined by PNWBA judges.  

Northshore Fire Dept. CERT class

The Northshore Fire Department, which serves Lake Forest Park, is offering Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, a Department of Homeland Security course starting Sept. 15.

CERT is an all-disaster preparedness course. Students learn how to suppress fires, apply disaster medical aid, conduct searches and execute safe rescues.

The eight-week course is held from 6-9 p.m. each Thursday at the Northshore Fire Department Headquarters Station, 18030 73rd Ave. NE. in Kenmore.

Parade, skate &sandcastle contest

To celebrate the city of Shoreline’s 10th anniversary, several events are scheduled from Aug. 19-21 throughout the city.

On Friday, Aug. 19, a teen skate competition and band show is scheduled at Connie King Skate Park, 15300 Eighth Avenue NE, Shoreline Parks.

Registration for the Shoreline Rotary Run begins at 8:15 a.m. on Aug. 20, for the 9 a.m. start time at Shoreline Stadium, 18560 First Ave. NE.

The Celebrate Shoreline Parade and Festival is set for 11 a.m. on Aug. 20 on 15th Ave. NE. The festival is from noon-5 p.m. at Ridgecrest Elementary School, 16516 10th Ave. NE.

A Celebrate Shoreline Sand Castle Building Contest will be at the Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, 2021 NW. 190th St.

Kiwanis Club hosts Crista speaker

The Shoreline Kiwanis Club invites residents to its Aug. 24 meeting to hear guest speaker Jim Gwinn from Crista Ministries.

The Kiwanis Club, which meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, supports local children’s charities and sponsors a Key Club for high school students. The meeting will be held at Spiros Pizza and Pasta, on 185th Street and Aurora Avenue N.
