Diabetes Wellness Group classes set
Residents are invited to attend classes focused on teaching people how to lower risks from complications of diabetes. The classes, facilitated by Molly Boll, a former Lake Forest Park resident, are scheduled 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22 and Monday, Sept. 27. Classes are held at Lake Forest Park City Hall, 17425 Ballinger Way NE.
At the class, a University of Washington diabetes nutritionist will speak on the glycemia index, carb-counting and other recent developments in diabetes care. To pre-register, call 425-836-4315.
Gateway open house Sept. 15
The city of Shoreline is hosting an open house 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, to gather community input on designs for a third gateway located at the intersection of Westminster, Dayton and N. 150th Street. The open house will be held at St. Dunstan’s Church, 722 N. 145th St.
Gateways not only act as landmarks, welcoming visitors and establishing a location, but reflect and enhance a sense of community. Developing a plan for gateways at key Shoreline entry points was a City Council goal the past few years.
On June 7, 2004, the city of Shoreline dedicated “The Ponies” Gateway. Located on N. 175th Street in Ronald Bog Park, this is the first of two gateways the city will complete this year. The second gateway, which is on N. 175th Street on the southeast corner of the I-5 interchange, is currently under construction.
Shoreline developed the Gateway Policy and Procedure Manual based on input from two public workshops co-hosted by the Planning Commission and the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services (PRCS) Advisory Board. The manual identifies and prioritizes potential gateway locations around Shoreline and outlines theme and design policies. Gateways are funded through Shoreline’s Capital Improvement Program.
Neighborhood celebration
Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1315 N.160th St., Shoreline, invites its neighbors and friends to enjoy a Fall Festival on the church grounds, 3 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 18.
The festival is part of the church’s year-long observance of its 100th anniversary— a neighborhood birthday party. Everything at the festival is free.
A celtic band, Up in the Air, will be a featured part of the festivities, providing music for listening and for dancing. Scottish folk dance instructor Clark Cavin will provide the know-how for festival goers to enjoy doing some Scottish dances. Â
An inflatable obstacle course, a ball pool and a moon walk inflatable bouncing room will help keep kids busy. Â
There will also be a dunk tank, fish pond game, ring toss, basketball hoop game, and bean bag toss with prizes for children.
A silly photo booth with photos of participants’ faces inserted into computer-generated poses was a success at the church festival two years ago and will be repeated. Face painting will be part of the fun, too.
Free refreshments include hamburgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, lemonade, coffee and tea.
