Long named to oversight panel
Former 44th District state Sen. Jeanine Long was named to a five-member panel to monitor Department of Social and Health Services program improvements on child welfare.
Long, of Mill Creek, was the Chair and Ranking Republican of the Senate Human Services and Corrections committee and a member of the Legislative Children’s Oversight Committee, Families For Kids Oversight Committee.
She was the recipient of the Governor’s 1998 Child Abuse Prevention Award and the prime sponsor of numerous bills requiring studies of and improvements to the state’s child welfare system.
New book club starting at library
Members of the Mill Creek Library’s book club are starting a new club called “Bring Your Own Book.”
The new club’s purpose is for members to talk for five minutes about a book they are reading or rereading, with the purpose being that club members can get recommendations for new books to read, regardless of genre.
The club has no membership fees. The first meeting is from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4 at the Mill Creek Library, 15429 Bothell-Everett Highway. For more information, call Ruth Griffith at 425-337-4822.
Dance class series begins today
The city of Mill Creek is offering adult dance classes starting today, Friday, Oct. 29 through Nov. 19 at City Hall, 15728 Main St.
The cost is $45 for residents and $52 for nonresidents. Instructor Lynn Gross has been teaching dance for more than 12 years. The styles taught will be West Coast Swing and Nightclub Two Step.

City code now available online
The Mill Creek Municipal Code is now accessible from the city’s Web site.
To view the city code, visit www.cityofmillcreek.com and from the home page in the left column will be a link to the Mill Creek Municipal Code.
City Hall address change coming
Starting Monday, Nov. 1, the street address for Mill Creek City Hall and police department will become Main Street, instead of Mill Creek Boulevard. The actual address number, as well as zip code, remain the same.
The new address is 15728 Main Street, Mill Creek, Wash., 98012.
In addition, all businesses located inside the Huntron Building, located next to city hall, will also have Main Street addresses as of Nov. 1.
Tuesday Council meeting canceled
The Tuesday, Nov. 2, Mill Creek City Council Study Session is canceled because of Election Day. The next Council meeting is Tuesday, Nov. 9.
Proposed home tract up for rezone
The Snohomish County Hearing Examiner will consider a rezone application for a proposed 21-lot residential subdivision called Camilla Lane on 4.3 acres on Sunset Road southeast of Mill Creek.
Spadafora Construction and Development applied for the rezone on the property, which is located at 17203 Sunset Road, on the east side of the road.
The hearing begins at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2 in the Earl Torgeson Hearing Room, 2802 Wetmore Ave., in Everett.
Two named to arts commission
Two area residents are among the members of the new seven-member Snohomish County Arts Commission.
Lakshmi Sanjay of Mill Creek is a dance instructor and operator of a dance and music school. She is a proponent of the classical South Indian dance form “Bharatanatyam,” in which she has trained since early childhood. She has performed at dance festivals in India and locally, and is a member of a Seattle/Portland-based cultural organization.
Barbara Cothern Hawksford of Bothell is a former state legislator and former Snohomish County Council member. She is former chair of the Snohomish County Lodging Tax Committee.
Coat and blanket drive taking place
The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post is having a coat and blanket drive until Nov. 12. All proceeds will benefit the Center for Battered Women and Children and the Everett Gospel Mission.
New and gently-used coats and blankets can be dropped off at the Sheriff’s Office South Precinct, 15928 Mill Creek Blvd., in Mill Creek.
Donations needed for Rescue Pup
Rescue Pup, a Mill Creek-based non-profit organization that finds homes for stray sick and injured dogs, regularly needs donations to cover veterinary expenses.
Donations can be made at Pet Pleasers, a non-profit pet supply store the organization operates. Pet Pleasers is located next to Claire’s Pantry at the corner of 9th Avenue SE and 164th Street SE.

DARE chocolate shield fund raiser
Mill Creek police are selling police department chocolate shields for $2 to benefit the DARE program.
The shields were made from a mold that was designed with the Mill Creek water wheel and the words “Mill Creek Police.” The shields can be purchased at the police department’s service counter inside City Hall, 15728 Main St.
