Candidate forum Monday night

The Mill Creek Lions Club and Merrill Gardens Retirement Community will host a candidate forum for the 1st and 44th legislative districts from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11 at Merrill Gardens, 14905 Bothell-Everett Highway.

The Lions have invited all legislative candidates from both districts to attend, but only Terry Buholm, a Libertarian running for state representative, position 1 from the 1st District, has not confirmed attendance, according to Lions Club member Roy DeSoto.

The event is free to attend and refreshments will be served. The Lions Club asks that all cell phones and pagers be turned off during the forum.

Garden Club meets on Tuesday

The Mill Creek Garden Club will present a check to Mill Creek Elementary School for its new garden club before its monthly meeting at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12.

October’s program is about aroma therapy, taught by Gwen Evans. Evans will talk about extracting the essential oils from common plants and their healing properties.

Mill Creek Town Center update

University Book Store’s location in Mill Creek Town Center is expected to open in December, community development director Bill Trimm told the City Council on Sept. 28.

In addition, he also announced that LA Fitness will build a 43,500-square-foot facility at Town Center’s north end.

LA Fitness’ location will be its first in Washington state, and University Book Store is placing its first Snohomish County store in Town Center.

Civil service meeting canceled

The Mill Creek Civil Service Commission’s Thursday, Oct. 14 meeting has been canceled because of a lack of business. The next scheduled meeting is Nov. 11.

Items sought for District 1 auction

Firefighters at Snohomish County Fire District 1 are seeking donations for their Holiday Harvest auction to benefit the Fire 1 Foundation.

The foundation is a nonprofit organization founded by employees of Fire District 1 to support fire department activities and the communities served by Fire District 1. The auction will provide funding for a variety of programs, such as establishing a public access defibrillation program and establish a community assistance program.

The auction is the evening of Nov. 20 at the Embassy Suites in Lynnwood.

Businesses or individuals who would like to donate items for the auction or purchase tickets for dinner and auction ($40 per person) can contact Leslie Hynes at 425-551-1243.

Donations needed for Rescue Pup

Rescue Pup, a Mill Creek-based non-profit organization that finds homes for stray sick and injured dogs, regularly needs donations to cover veterinary expenses.

Donations can be made at Pet Pleasers, a non-profit pet supply store the organization operates. Pet Pleasers is located next to Claire’s Pantry at the corner of 9th Avenue SE and 164th Street SE.

DARE chocolate shield fund raiser

Mill Creek police are selling police department chocolate shields for $2 to benefit the DARE program.

The shields were made from a mold that was designed with the Mill Creek water wheel and the words “Mill Creek Police.” The shields can be purchased at the police department’s service counter inside City Hall, 15728 Mill Creek Blvd.
