Old Fircrest School buildings removed

The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) will join King County to demolish approximately a dozen deteriorating World War II-era buildings on the Fircrest School campus in Shoreline over the next several months. Fircrest is a DSHS institution for people with developmental disabilities.

The actual number of buildings that DSHS will demolish will depend upon the lowest bid obtained by King County’s bidding process. King County plans to remove five buildings it has been using on the campus as an alcohol and drug rehabilitation facility, which has been closed.

DSHS plans to demolish at least seven buildings which were built as a part of a World War II Navy hospital. The buildings subsequently were used as dormitories and program areas for people with developmental disabilities and other support services.

DSHS will review the individual building bids supplied by the low bidder to determine how many buildings will be torn down based on available funds. King County is scheduled to request bids late this month.

Public hearing on land use changes

Lake Forest Park city staff want input from residents about proposed residential land use changes. An open house has been scheduled from 5-7 p.m. and a public hearing at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at Lake Forest Park City Hall, 17425 Ballinger Way NE.

The planning commission has been working on updating the Comprehensive Plan for several years and has held two public hearings to encourage comments on the draft that was first provided for public review in November 2002.

At the most recent public hearing June 22, many residents expressed their concerns regarding the proposed changes in the land use designation and identified additional parcels containing sensitive areas.

In response to citizen comments, the planning commission has made additional changes to the land use designations on the city’s future land use map.
