Art exhibited at Spartan Gym

Art from the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council collection is now on display at Spartan Gym, 18560 First Ave. NE in Shoreline. Four pieces from the Art Council’s rotating Portable Works Collection are displayed in the glass cases in the gym’s lobby, including the mixed media piece Steel Drums by Shoreline resident Joan Archer.

The Portable Works Collection consists of 31 pieces of art purchased from shows at the Shoreline Arts Festival and from private donations from citizens. The collection was started in 1994 and now includes pieces spanning all mediums and sizes.

Six of the 31 pieces were created by artists living in Shoreline, including: At the Lake, pastel by Sandra Rae; Brocade, monoprint by Ann Blanch (exhibited at the Eastside Neighborhood Precinct); Behind the Green Door, watercolor by Joan Archer. (exhibited at Shoreline City Hall); The Olde Homestead, photograph by Sis Polin (exhibited at the Westside Neighborhood Precinct); Balancing Act, encaustic by Edward Presson (exhibited at Lake Forest Park City Hall); and Collage II, a print by Judy Odell (exhibited at the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation office).

Family fire safety classes offered

Children under the age of eight are the most at risk for injury or death in house fires. Does your family have an escape plan — and do your children know what to do if the smoke alarm goes off? The Shoreline Fire Department offers presentations on Family Fire Safety to school, church, scouting and community groups. Make a resolution to be safe at home in 2005. For more information, call 206-533-6500 and ask for community education.

Senior Shuttles needs volunteers

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Shuttle transports seniors from their homes to the senior center and local destinations. Solely driven by volunteers, many seniors rely on this free service to help them stay healthy and independent. To sustain this valuable service, Senior Services needs more volunteer drivers.

The shuttle runs weekdays and volunteers choose the shifts they wish to drive. No lifting or bearing of weight is involved and drivers do not need a special driver’s license. Volunteer drivers must be over 25 years old, hold a valid driver’s license, and have no at-fault accidents during the past three years. Free training is provided.

For more information, call the shuttle manager at 206-727-6262 or apply online at www.seniorservices.org.
