Post office closed

to honor Reagan

In accordance with the national day of mourning for former President Ronald Reagan, who died June 5, state offices, including the Edmonds Post Office, will be closed Friday, June 11. City offices and schools will remain open on that day, and Community Transit local and commuter routes will operate on regular weekday schedules.

Bids out to improve streets

Members of the Edmonds City Council June 1 approved a call for bids for the Alder St. Utility replacement and 231st Pl. SW and 97th Ave. W. storm improvements project. The total amount approved for the project is $216,000. The project is aimed at overcoming deficiencies found in the neighborhood between Fifth and Sixth avenues south on Alder Street during new development.

A call for bids also was approved for the city’s 2004 street overlay program, with the budget set at $475,000 for asphalt concrete street overlays. The improvements outlined in the program include taking measures to prolong the life of Edmonds’ city streets and to provide smoother driving surfaces.

Annual Kiwanis berry sale set

Edmonds Seniors Kiwanis members will begin their annual berry sale June 16 at the South County Senior Center. Strawberries will be the first available fruit this year, and will come in 15- and 30- pound containers, ready for the freezer or for jelly, jam or strawberry shortcake. In addition, raspberries will be available July 15, and will come in 4 and 28 pound containers. Blueberries will be available Aug. 5 in 10 pound boxes. The berries are delivered from Mike and Jean’s Berry Farm near Mount Vernon by senior Kiwanians.

Proceeds from the sale go toward assisting local programs such as The Little Red Schoolhouse, Meadowdale PreSchool, Children’s Hospital, Healthy Mothers-Healthy Babies, Kiwanis bike helmets for elementary school children and Clothes for Kids.

Safe driving class for seniors

AARP Driver Safety Program classes currently are available at several Edmonds locations. The class is designed to help seniors ages 50 and over with years of driving experience to be safer drivers and possibly receive discounts on car insurance.

The next class is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 23 and 24 at the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St. in Edmonds. Participants must attend both days and pay a $10 materials fee payable to AARP at class time. Advance class registration is required. Instructors for the classes are unpaid volunteers. To register, call Edmonds Parks &Recreation at 425-771-0230. Classes also are held at Stevens Hospital (425-640-4066) and at the South County Senior Center (425-774-5555).

Summer fun

in Edmonds

Super Summer Day Camp is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 28 through Aug. 13 at the Frances Anderson Center. The camp will be closed Monday, July 5. The camp is designed for kids ages six to 12, and includes games, field trips, a talent show, weekly themes and other special events. Additional morning and afternoon care will be available each camp day from 8-10 a.m. and 3-5:30 p.m. for an additional fee.

Registration is available on a weekly basis or for the full summer. Program fees differ and includes supplies, some local field trips, and a Summer Experience t-shirt. Program limited to 20 campers.

Sno-King Chorale

The Sno-King Community Chorale is presenting a Pops Concert, featuring Ed Aliverti, The Seattle Jazz Singers and the DeMiero Quartet (the four grandchildren of Frank and Yvonne DeMiero)

The event starts at 7:30 p.m. June 12 at the Edmonds Center for the Arts on 4th Street just north of the city of Edmonds. $10 for general admission and all students are admitted free.
