Fire Dist. 1 offers disaster classes

Fire District 1 is offering Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training for citizens interested in learning how they can help their community during a major disaster. Classes meet twice a week beginning June 3. During a regional emergency such as an earthquake or other disaster, firefighters and other first responders may not be able to meet the heavy demand for services.

CERT classes teach citizens about readiness, basic disaster first aid, search and rescue operations, how to put out small fires and the psychological effect of disasters.

Classes meet 6-10 p.m. every Monday and Thursday beginning June 3 at the Mariner Fire Station, 12310 Meridian Ave., Everett. A date for the final exam will be announced the first night of the class.

The class is free; however, students will need to create (or purchase) a home disaster kit and purchase personal safety equipment to participate in some class activities.

To register, e-mail name, address and daytime phone to kschroeder@firedistrict1.org or call 425-551-1200.

As part of the City’s 50th Birthday celebration, the Historical Committee is contacting long-time residents and those who remember the City’s incorporation to gather their stories and recollections. The Committee plans to display the collection in the library for all to enjoy during the year-long celebration. A book of the remembrances to honor the City will be published at the end of 2004. Contact the Historical Committee at 23204 58th Avenue W., Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043 or email cityhall@ci.mlt.wa.us. The center is in need of old or new cellular phones, even ones with missing parts can help, Center officials said. Usable cell phones will be provided free to all women who use the center’s services. In case of emergency old phones can still be used to dial 911. The ones that can’t be used will be recycled to a business who has agreed to pay the non-profit organization for parts. To donate phones, drop them off at the Mountlake Terrace Police Department at 5906 232nd St. SW. For more information call Terri or Vicci at 425-259-2827.
