Sen. Fairley, Rep. Kagi recognized
Two 32nd District legislators have been recognized by the Children’s Alliance this year. State Senator Darlene Fairley and State Rep. Ruth Kagi have been named 2006 Champions for Children. The legislators were the lawmakers most responsible for victories in the Children’s Alliance campaigns, according to a press release.
Fairley was the prime sponsor of a Senate Bill to preserve the child safety net for families sanctioned in the WorkFirst program (SB 6628). Fairley also worked to ensure that funding was in the Senate budget proposal to implement the bill. While the bill did not pass, the overall effort succeeded when Governor Christine Gregoire announced on Feb. 28 a delay in implementing the full family sanctions.
Kagi led the legislature’s approval of the new Department of Early Learning (House Bill 2964). She also is a nationally recognized leader in the field of early learning and her work raised the visibility of early childhood learning to a new level in the legislature, according to the release.
