Volunteers needed to count homeless
Volunteers are needed for the One Night Count of homeless people from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 27. Sponsored by the Seattle King County Coalition for the Homeless and Operation Night Watch, this is the third year a street count will be completed in North King County and the 25th year for King County. The One Night Count in North King County is co-sponsored by the United Way of King County, North Community Council, North Urban Human Services Alliance and the city of Shoreline.
The local One Night Count is part of a national census of the homeless carried out in cities throughout the U.S. the morning of Jan. 27. The count consists of two parts: a street count of people living without shelter; and a census of all the emergency shelters in King County. Last year 39 homeless people living outside shelters were counted in the street count in North King County, a 63 percent increase over the previous year.
Counters work in small teams of 4-6 volunteers and will be assigned areas in Shoreline, Kenmore and Bothell. Volunteers must be 18 or older to participate. To volunteer for the One Night Count, contact George Smith with the City of Shoreline at 206-546-5569 or gsmith@ci.shoreline- .wa.us.
