Community Transit fares are going up this fall.
The Oct. 1 increase that will push fares to the next 25-cent increment was approved unanimously by the Community Transit Board of Directors. The board also approved switching all Community Transit pass-users to Puget Passes, which are accepted throughout the region.
This is the first time in seven years, according to CT officials.
Local adult fares will increase to $1.25 from $1; youth fares will be 75 cents instead of 60 cents and senior/disabled fares will rise to 50 cents from 30 cents. Dial-A-Ride Transportation (DART) paratransit service also will increase to $1.25 from $1.
Commuter fares will not change.
To get public input on the proposed fare increase, Community Transit conducted several meetings, put information on buses, had articles in local newspapers and sent a letter to all DART customers. Comments from the general public actually tended to favor the fare increase, recognizing the need to help maintain high quality service, according to CT officials.
“Asking people to pay more is always hard, but it is gratifying to know that many people see our need to keep up with increasing service costs,” said Lynn Walty, Community Transit Board chair.
Community Transit currently produces its own youth and senior/disabled passes which are accepted on CT and Sound Transit buses in Snohomish County.
