Congressman Jay Inslee to visit SCC

U.S. Representative Jay Inslee, a leader on alternative energy, will visit Shoreline Community College at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 17, to learn about its new solar energy system design program. He also will talk about his work on national energy policy.

He will first stop by the Zero Energy House on the west side of campus near the campus theater. During his visit, Inslee will talk with the students completing inaugural training in designing systems that turn the solar power into electricity for residential and commercial use. These graduates will receive certification – a Silicon Energy Manufacturing Certificate – and be able to move directly into the workplace.

The program is the first of its kind in the state.

These upcoming classes are to be offered at the college: Solar/Photovoltaic PV Designer Certificate, summer 2008; Solar Thermal Design, fall 2008; Zero Energy Building Design, winter 2009 and Introduction to Energy in the Bull Environment, spring 2009.

Guantanamo chaplain to speak at SCC,

James Yee, former U.S. Army chaplain at Guantanamo Bay, speaks at Shoreline Community College Wednesday, May 14.

After serving as a muslim chaplain at Guantanamo Bay for 10 months, James “Yusuf” Yee was accused of spying, espionage, and aiding alleged Taliban and Al-Qaeda prisoners.

He was arrested, locked in a navy prison, and detained for 76 days in solitary confinement. Now cleared and exonerated of all criminal charges, he has publicly exposed the abuse of detainees at Guantanamo Bay and the failures of U.S. military justice.

He resigned from the army in 2005 with honorable discharge. Since his resignation, he has made public presentations on Guantanamo and how he struggled to prove his innocence.

Yee authored “For God and Country: Faith and Patriotism Under Fire”, with journalist Aimee Molloy in 2005.

Yee will be at these campus events May 14:

SCC students honored by Toyota

Shoreline Community College Toyota T-TEN students and graduates met their instructors at Qwest Field in Seattle April 13 to celebrate an award at a party hosted by Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc.

The program was awarded earlier this year when it was selected as one of five programs nationwide to receive the 2007 T-TEN School Recognition Award from Toyota Motor Sales.

Shoreline’s program was chosen for its implementation of the national training model, including placement of students at Toyota dealerships, meeting graduate objectives, maintenance of instructor and program certifications and compliance with Toyota training requirements.

Ridgecrest Elementary hosts potluck

Ridgecrest Elementary School will host “Taste of Ridgecrest: A Multicultural Potluck” from 6-8:30 p.m. May 15.

Attendees can sample exotic fare and American classics at the school’s outdoor food pavilion, including grilled hot dogs, fried chicken and potluck items. PCC Natural Market will be at the event, as will Shoreline fire and police, for hands-on activities. There will also be music and dances, games, stories and crafts, as well as a raffle ticket sale with prizes.

There also will be a Henna Hut, offering henna tattoos.

Romeo and Juliet coming to Shorecrest

The Seattle Shakespeare Company will perform “Romeo and Juliet” May 15 at the Shorecrest High School Theater. Free dessert is at 6 p.m. and the performance is at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

Shorewood Jazz Band wins at festival

The Shorewood Jazz Band placed first for the third consecutive year in its division at the Reno Jazz Festival April 24 to 26.

Solos by Chris Lewis on trumpet, Brad Murphy on alto and soprano saxophone and Dimiter Yordanov on guitar highlighted Shorewood’s performance.

Shorewood joined more than 330 middle, high school and college groups participating in the Reno festival.

World-class jazz artists, music educators and jazz students from throughout the West spent three days immersed in live jazz performance, competitions and clinics.

The band, directed by Paul Harshman, will next perform at the Essentially Ellington Festival at Lincoln Center in New York City on May 17.
