MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Work started on the city’s new fire station Monday, March 7.

The first phase of work will include grading the site, trenching for utilities, and upgrading the stormwater pond in Veteran’s Memorial Park, city officials said.

Work on the stormwater pond in Veteran’s Park will require temporarily closing the trail that leads through the park.

The issue has been contentious from the beginning and while the construction go ahead was voted by the majority of the City Council, it didn’t happen without a lot of debate from some council members and citizens.

The City Council voted 4-3 Feb. 7 in favor of accepting a total project bid from Premium Construction Group of about $2.5 million.

According to city officials, the fire station, which will be built to the north and next to the police department on 232nd Street SW, is estimated to be complete in November.
