EDMONDS

Edmonds City Councilman David Orvis has been charged with misdemeanor assault in a fight with his 13-year-old son in May over his homework.

Orvis is accused of dragging the boy by his hair and slamming his head on a table.

Orvis says he does not plan to resign because of the case. He says he and his wife are seeing a counselor and seeking therapy for their son.

The boy was not injured and continues to live with the family.

“When I first learned of the incident, I asked Councilmember Orvis to step down,” Edmonds Mayor Gary Haakenson said in a statement. “I felt it would be a distraction to a City Council that collectively has enough on their plates at this time. Mr. Orvis declined to step down and said he would obtain legal counsel. I haven’t had any conversation with him since then.

“Our thoughts are with the Orvis family as they work through these tough times.”

Because of Monday’s charge, the Department of Social and Health Services is taking another look at the case.

If Orvis is convicted he could face up to a year in jail.
