Residents who have compiled a stock of old paint, used automotive fuels and pesticides will have a chance to get rid of the items later this year.

Snohomish County’s solid waste division confirmed this week that it has enough funding in its budget this year to bring a company to Mill Creek to have a one-time hazardous materials dumping day.

The six-hour event will take place Saturday, May 14, one week after the spring version of the Mill Creek Community Association’s city-wide garage sale. The event will take place in the parking lot of Mill Creek City Hall.

“The closer we are to good weather, the better turnout we’ll have,” Michelson said.

The event will likely be promoted by inserts into city storm water utility bills. The inserts would not only promote the event, but also tell residents what kind of chemicals can and cannot be accepted.

Last March, when Michelson began the effort to bring the event to Mill Creek, she said she had not heard of any instances of illegal chemical dumping taking place in Mill Creek.

The event is being paid for by Snohomish County.

Residents who have wanted to legally dispose of such items have had to travel to facilities in Everett or Mountlake Terrace. It is illegal to dump such items into the garbage or down a sewer drain.

Michelson also is looking for volunteers to assist with the event, such as helping residents dispose of used motor oil and automotive anti-freeze. If interested, call Michelson’s city hall voice mail at 425-921-5732.
