The Shoreline Christian girls basketball team is off to a good start this summer after it finished fifth at the state Class 2B tournament for the second straight year.
The Crusaders joined 35 other teams in a week-long camp at Soap Lake in eastern Washington which wrapped up July 9. The squad won most of its games and lost in overtime to 1B state runner-up Colton.
Shoreline Christian also won the Mount Vernon Summer League, going 7-1 with its only loss coming to Anacortes. The Mount Vernon league featured players from 2A, 3A and 4A schools like Burlington-Edison, Mount Vernon and Oak Harbor.
The Crusaders tried to get into the Shoreline Center summer league but were the first team on the waiting list.
The team returns three starters including sophomore-to-be Angela Woods, a 5-foot, 9-inch guard who led the team and the Northwest A/B League with an 18.1 scoring average last year. Also back are 5-9 forward Angela DeKoekkoek, a senior-to-be, and 5-7 guard Sarah Daigneault, a senior-to-be. DeKoekkoek and Daigneault will serve as captains.
“We’ve got good leaders,” said Shoreline Christian coach Stan De Yager, who will enter his 27th year this November. “They’re having fun together. The younger players feel so invited because of their leadership.”
The top newcomer is sophomore-to-be Lizzie Brooks, a point guard who transferred from Seattle Prep last year. Brooks had to play junior varsity because she transferred too late to play varsity but she should make a big impact this season as she takes over from four-year starter Ann Barrick.
“She’s doing a great job as a sophomore-to-be,” De Yager said.
Juniors-to-be Hayley Ott, Rachel Schneider and Bethany Richards will be battling for the other starting forward/post position.
The back-up point guards are sophomores-to-be Meesha Hoskins and Maria Anderson. Juniors-to-be Amanda Carlson and Sara VanderGiessen along with sophomore-to-be Kim VanderGiessen round out the roster.
The Crusaders wrap up their summer schedule with two games at home against Bellevue Christian and a couple games against AAU squads.
