Olympic Ballet Theatre hosts a special performance of the New York City dance company, danielandsomesuperfriends, in a preview performance of “Out of the Dust,” at 7:30 p.m. June 17 and 18 at the Edmonds Center for the Arts.
Presented in conjunction with the National Education Association’s Read Across America program, “Out of the Dust” is set in an attic brought to life by the intensely imaginative art of Edmonds resident James Martin. The characters (dancers) are abstract figures caught in the recesses of a young persons psyche. Relationships and expressions of angst and love play out in a whirlwind of athletic movement. The characters stumble across books and begin to experience ideas found in the pages, the sense of isolation disappears and community develops.
The production features the athletic choreography of Daniel Wilkins (recently appointed Associate Artistic Director of Olympic Ballet Theatre), a driving new score by composer Joseph Fraioli (aka Datach’i) and a special visual arts installation by Martin.
Immediately following the performance the Artistic Director and dancers will hold a question and answer forum.
The completed work will debut in October 2005 at Diane von Furstenberg – The Theater in New York City, with a Seattle premiere to be announced. Von Furstenberg has been the signature costume designer for all of dass’ productions.
Dass was founded by Wilkins in 2000 to push the physical limits of dance, in their own unique style of “All-Terrain Movement,” combining features of ballet, modern dance, yoga, and martial arts to create athletic, expressive works of art. Wilkins is a graduate of the School of American Ballet. Before creating the troupe, he performed with Donald Byrd The Group, Suzanne Farrell, and Complexions.
“Out of the Dust” will be presented in two performance, 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18 at The Edmonds Center for the Arts, located at 410 4th Avenue N. in Edmonds. Tickets are $10 general admission, free for children under 12, available by calling 425-672-7758 or via the internet at www.dassdance. org. Proceeds benefit the renovation of Edmonds Center for the Arts.
