Democrat to challenge Larsen

Democratic Congressman Rick Larsen doesn’t yet have a Republican opponent in the 2nd District, but another Democrat has announced his candidacy.

He’s Dick McManus, a military retiree who lives in the Silver Lake area.

McManus is a precinct committee officer who declared a candidacy against then-Sheriff Rick Bart in 2003 but withdrew after he was able to raise only $700 of the $1,000 filing fee. He attempted a write-in candidacy for 44th District state representative spot in 2010, when the only Democratic candidate suspended his candidacy after the withdrawal deadline, but McManus got little support.

McManus has not registered with the Federal Elections Commission because he hasn’t approached the required $5,000 raised or spent. He says that he needs to raise $1,740 for the filing fee or collect 1,740 signatures by the May 14-18 filing period.

He says that he disagrees with several of Larsen’s votes on military issues.

McManus also has announced a candidacy for president and pushed for impeachment of President Barack Obama as an accessory to what he calls war crimes by former President George W. Bush and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

The 2nd Congressional District formerly included all of the territory from Everett to the Canadian border, but, with redistricting, will no longer include the inland parts of Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom counties but will add Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and Brier.

Larsen reports cash on hand for the campaign of $733,787.

Snohomish County Republican State Committeewoman Olga Farnam said last month that she had talked to a possible Republican candidate but couldn’t say who it is.
