It is often difficult for the average citizen to assess a politician’s merit because the environment in which they operate in is often fraught with accusations, half-truths, out-of-context statements and the like. However, there are times when one sees a crack and the light comes shining through to illuminate the inside of one’s brain. With the recent committee assignments made by the House Democrats, I had one of those illuminating moments. With the Democrats squarely in control and assigning “chairs” to committees for the upcoming session, it appears that the music has stopped and Rep. Chase has been passed over by her Democratic colleagues for a Republican. All the other “chairs” in the House were awarded to Democrats except the Environmental Health Committee, where Rep. Chase was given the Vice-Chair position. The old adage “action speaks louder than words,” for me, Rep. Chase’s House colleagues have made a clear statement about their lack of confidence in Rep. Chase’s effectiveness by passing her over to select a Republican. This is quite revealing given that the other 32nd District legislators, Rep. Kagi and Sen. Fairley, continue to be assigned significant leadership positions by their Democratic colleagues.
