Development must stick to zoning code

We at 110 James Street are extremely interested in what will be developed in the area across Sunset from our homes. The commonly referred to Waterfront Property studies alerted us to what might happen. We believe that any improvement on that plot must follow current zoning regulations. We have several reasons for that opinion as follows:

1. Our building developers and others in the vicinity were held to those standards. Why should others be allowed to build in front of them?

2. The qualities that make Edmonds the unique city it is would be forever changed.

3. Many of us live here because we enjoy the small town feel of this community.

4. View corridors would be damaged by higher structures.

5. The site could be developed as a town enhancement as demonstrated by the Edmonds-Woodway High School students.

6. The Hotel Group was denied a permit a year ago for height concerns.

7. A quote used in a The Gregory ad (Seattle Times 7/26/08): “Part of Edmonds appeal is that it hasn’t compromised its character or artistic roots”.

We support the views expressed by Councilman Bernheim if indeed the property needs to be purchased by the city. Either that or hold the owners to current zoning rules.

We are aware that the city needs operating funds but it is not the way to generate them by the extreme measures suggested by the developers. Thanks for your attention.
