District hosts elementary math nights

Edmonds School District elementary parents are invited to attend a workshop about math in the elementary grades. The district is holding two identical workshops.

They will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at Terrace Park School, 5409 228th St. SW, Mountlake Terrace, and from 7-8:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at Meadowdale Elementary, 6505 168th St. SW, Lynnwood.

Teachers will show math lessons, focusing on key ideas for each grade level. Topics include addition and subtraction through second grade, multiplication across the grades and fractions for grades five and six. Childcare will be provided at both workshops.

Parents also will learn how to help children with their homework.

Running Start info night at EdCC

A Running Start Information Night for high school juniors and seniors will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Feb. 5 in Triton Union Building 202 at Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood.

Through the program, juniors and seniors may attend college tuition-free. Learn about eligibility requirements, admission and registration, and classes available.

The college serves more than 500 Running Start students per quarter from 35 public high schools, as well as some private school and home-school students.

Mukilteo Hall celebration Jan. 31

Locals are invited to Edmonds Community College’s grand opening celebration of Mukilteo Hall from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Jan. 31 at the hall on campus.

The event will include music by college jazz students, refreshments prepared by culinary arts students and tours of the building provided by students who work as tutors in the Learning Support Center.

At 11 a.m., Sen. Paull Shin, D–Edmonds, will give a keynote address. Student Angela Moe will talk about her experience in high school completion classes and about earning her associate of arts degree at the college.

Tours will be from 11:20 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At 7 p.m., the Edmonds Community College Foundation will honor the college’s 2007 Distinguished Alumni. They are: Catherine French, a child protective services investigator for the Department of Social and Health Services; Melody Tucker, a law clerk at Hawkes Law Firm in Shoreline; and Chad Lewis, a business instructor at Everett Community College.

Mukilteo Hall, a 58,000-square-foot, $14.5 million four-story building, will offer classrooms for high school completion, English as second language, adult basic education and GED preparation. The Learning Support Center provides tutoring in writing, math and other subjects. A new Math Center gives an option for students taking pre-college level math courses to register for individualized math classes.

A new Volunteer Literacy Program connects volunteers with adults seeking to improve reading, writing and math skills. Tutors are needed — call 425-640-1032.

Gilder Lehrman Summer Seminars

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, based in New York, N.Y., will sponsor 32 tuition-free, one-week teacher enrichment seminars across the U.S. and England for teachers at every grade level.

Applications must be postmarked or submitted electronically by Feb. 15.

Participants will receive a $400 stipend, books, and room and board. Public, parochial, independent school teachers and National Park Service employees are eligible to apply.

Historians from universities including Stanford, Columbia, Yale and the University of Virginia will lead seminars on topics ranging from the Colonial Era, the U.S. Constitution, and the Underground Railroad to the Great Depression, the Cold War, and the Civil Rights Movement. Last year, more than 700 educators from 49 states and six foreign countries participated.

EdCC seeks public comments for review

The public is invited to participate in Edmonds Community College’s formal accreditation process. Accreditation recognizes educational institutions for performance, integrity and quality.

Edmonds Community College reviews its operations for accreditation every 10 years. In 2006, the college began a self-study to examine all facets of its work and prepare for its 2008 accreditation site visit.

An evaluation committee will visit Edmonds Community College April 23-25. The committee will determine whether the college is organized, staffed and supported to offer the educational programs and services described in its catalog and whether it’s prepared to meet its enrollment projections.
