As members of this community, which has always prioritized its children and firmly supported public education, I can only assume that many of you feel as saddened as I do with respect to the events of the past week. Having been a part of the Shoreline Schools community since 1973, I feel a tremendous responsibility to do everything possible to ensure the well being of our children, families and staff.
Our 63-year history demonstrates that Shoreline is a community that cares deeply about its children, serves its families to the best of its ability and values the importance of public education. It is imperative that we preserve these values. Over the past year and a half, difficult decisions have been made regarding staffing, programming and school closures. These decisions were not easy — but I believe they were necessary to ensure Shoreline’s continued success. My focus has always been on student learning and solid instructional practice and support.
I acknowledge the anxiety and uncertainty our recent staffing decisions have caused. I regret that we did not have the ability to give our entire community proper advance notice of these changes and their potential impact on our students, staff and classrooms. I can assure you that we will do our best to keep you better informed about these issues in the future.
I am committed to making every effort to build trust and strong, productive relationships between district leadership and our entire community. We have a devoted team of thoughtful and committed leaders that have no agenda other than supporting this community and bringing long-term stability to Shoreline.
During the coming days and weeks, our leadership team will be available to meet with staff, parents and concerned community members. We are looking forward to the opportunity to discuss the issues that are important to each of you.
As always, thank you for your continued dedication to our district, and know that we are all committed to working in partnership with our staff, our families and the community to ensure the excellence of the Shoreline Schools.
Sue Walker
