The community has responded to a locally-based non-profit animal rescue organization’s need to pay off accumulated medical bills.

Mill Creek-based Rescue Pup has raised approximately $1,000 to cover veterinary expenses it undertook when it took in a litter of puppies that suffered from a variety of ailments, and eight of them ended up in intensive care.

Since the organization announced it was need of additional donations to cover vet bills, Rescue Pup has raised approximately $1,000, volunteer Allicia Crockett said. The figure, however, only covers less than a third of the organization’s bill for care for the litter, which came out to $3,800, according to volunteer Joyce Gonzalez.

The donations, however, have been coming in at a steady rate, Crockett said. Last Thursday alone the group received $350 in donations from people who came into its pet supply store at the corner of 164th Street SE and 9th Avenue SE. Most of the donations have been in the $100 range.

“We are just thrilled about it,” Gonzalez said.

Community support has made a dent in the bills, but more are upcoming. The organization has taken in a French Mastiff named Melvin who recently underwent eye surgery. In addition, the organization took in a 7-month-old chocolate Labrador retriever named Brownie, who has needed a series of operations.

“That’s the ongoing story,” Gonzalez said. “It never stops.”

Rescue Pup recovers some of its expenses by $100 fees collected when dogs are adopted. In May, the organization placed 28 dogs into homes.

Donations of any amount can be made at the store, located at 800 164th St SE, Suite M next to Claire’s Pantry, between the hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. For more information on donating or adopting a dog, call 425-742-6072.
