Solid-waste fees to grow in March
For the first time since 1992, Snohomish County solid-waste rates for the disposal of garbage at transfer stations will increase. To offset this increase, rates on other solid-waste services have been reduced or made free.
The county has been able to avoid a rate increase during the past 17 years by using proceeds from land sales to subsidize its operating costs. A 2008 service study, however, determined that the county’s Solid Waste Division could no longer rely on reserves to fund operations.
Beginning March 1, the minimum garbage fee at solid-waste transfer stations will increase from $17 to $20 for disposal of up to 360 pounds of garbage. The per-ton rate will rise from $89 to $105.
The minimum cost to dispose of and recycle yard debris and clean wood has been lowered from $17 to $11 for up to 500 pounds, or from $89 per ton to $45 per ton.
Customers also may now dispose freely of electronics through a new electronics-recycling program. Residents, small businesses and charities are allowed to recycle computers, monitors and TVs for free due to a statewide manufacturer sponsored program.
Snohomish County operates three transfer stations and five neighborhood recycling and disposal centers also known as “drop boxes.” For more information on facilities, rates or recycling, go to www.snoco.org and search for “solid waste” or call 425-388-3425.
Talk roads, hear road updates
The city of Edmonds is hosting a public open house at 5 p.m., Thursday, March 5 in City Hall to city discuss transportation projects.
The open house will deal specifically with the city’s draft transportation plan, while giving an update on intersection improvement project at Highway 99 and 76th Avenue West. City staff and city consultants will be on-hand to hear citizen comments, and talk about issues surrounding the projects.
Presentations are at 5:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., with each session followed by the opportunity to provide input.
The city is currently updating the transportation element of its Comprehensive Plan, so now is the time to offer comment on city plans, and possible transportation improvements projects.
It is also doing preliminary design of a planned intersection improvement project at Highway 99 and 76th Avenue West. The project will extend 228th Street Southwest from 76th Avenue West to Highway 99 with two new traffic signals — one at Highway 99 and 228th Street Southwest, and another at 76th Avenue West and 228th Street Southwest. A raised-center median will be installed on Highway 99 in the vicinity of 76th Avenue West that would prevent left turns across three lanes of northbound Highway 99.
The open house will be held in the Brackett Room on the third floor of City Hall, at 121 5th Ave. N. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.
