Law enforcement agencies in Snohomish County will participate in the statewide Drive Hammered, Get Nailed crackdown that will take place between Aug. 15 and Sept. 1.
The program honors DUI victims and victims’ families in in Washington.
Edmonds, Lake Stevens, Lynnwood, Marysville, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace and Snohomish police departments will particate as well as the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol.
On August 10, 2004, Dawn Salmonson was driving to her mother’s home in Snohomish County on State Route 203 with her 5-year-old daughter, Destiny, in the back seat.
Salmonson lost control of her vehicle in Fall City and veered off the road and into the Snoqualmie River. Salmonson tried repeatedly to pull Destiny from the back seat of the vehicle but was unsuccessful.
Nearby residents pulled Salmonson from the river but Destiny remained buckled in her booster seat and died at the scene.
Salmonson was arrested with a blood-alcohol level nearly three times the legal limit. She was convicted of Vehicular Homicide.
The No. 1 one cause of traffic deaths in the state is driver impairment.
In 2007, traffic crashes killed 568 people on Washington’s roadways. Nearly 50 percent of those deaths were caused by drunk and impaired drivers.
