MARYSVILLE — For three quarters, the Edmonds-Woodway girls basketball team stayed right with North Division No. 1 seed Monroe in Tuesday night’s Northwest District 4A loser-out game.
But the Bearcats pulled away from the Warriors in the fourth quarter thanks in large part to 14 points from the free throw line to defeat Edmonds-Woodway 63-43 at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.
The Warriors trailed 40-33 at the start of the fourth quarter but found themselves down by 10 almost immediately when Monroe freshman guard Sarah Morton stole the inbounds pass and then dished the ball to senior guard Chelsey Zimmerman, who was fouled scoring on a layup. Zimmerman made the free throw to give the Bearcats a 43-33 lead.
A pair of free throws by junior center Kirsten Thompson, the first of 14 in the quarter, extended the Monroe lead to 47-35 at the 6:17 mark of the fourth quarter.
Edmonds-Woodway (17-6) cut the deficit to 49-39 on a free throw by senior guard Rebekah Wells and then to 51-41 on a Wells’ shot but could not draw any closer the rest of the night.
“I feel like they beat us from the free throw line,” Warriors coach Amy Branch said. “They were relentless and they wanted to win. They’re a good team.”
E-W junior forward Katie Trew scored eight of her team-high 18 points in the first quarter.
Monroe was led by Thompson, who scored 18 points. Morton added 14 and Brittany Heilman had 11.
