Edmonds-Woodway senior-to-be Ricky McDonald has earned his second straight trip to the U.S. Amateur Golf Championships.

McDonald qualified for the national tournament by finishing in the top four at a sectional qualifier July 29 at Chambers Bay Golf Course in Tacoma. McDonald shot a two-round total of 142 to finish tied for second.

The U.S. Amateur Golf Championships are Aug. 18-24 at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in North Carolina.

McDonald played in last year’s tournament, which was at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.

“I’m going to know what to expect,” McDonald said. “Last year I was taking in the experience. I know what to expect going in there.”

The first two days of the tournament are stroke play and the final four days are match play.

“I’m hoping to make it to match play this year,” McDonald said. “That’s my goal.”

McDonald, who was planning to play in this week’s PNGA Junior Boys Tournament at the Mill Creek Country Club, was scheduled to leave Aug. 14 for North Carolina.

McDonald plans to attend Edmonds-Woodway High School for his senior year. He previously attended Chrysalis School in Woodinville and played for the Warriors’ golf team.
