EDMONDS — Edmonds-Woodway’s wrestling team closed out its regular season by dominating a depleted Shorewood team 57-15 Jan. 26.
The Warriors won 10 of 14 matches, recorded six pins in the and jumped out to a 24-0 advantage after a forfeit and three pins.
“Good way to end the dual meet season,” said E-W senior Riley Stannard, who pinned Shorewood’s Michael Hampton 50 seconds into the 275-pound match.
Edmonds-Woodway coach Mike Hanchett was pleased with his team’s performance. The Warriors got in a rhythm and never let up.
“It was a nice way to finish out for our seniors,” he said. “They just kept it going the whole time.”
Edmonds-Woodway senior Jeremy Pautler wrestled up a weight class at 160 pounds and came away with a 5-0 decision over Shorewood’s Luke Wyman.
“I was pretty satisfied with my performance,” Pautler said. “I scored a point in each round which is what I wanted to do.”
Both Pautler and Stannard competed in the Region 1 tournament last year and narrowly missed qualifying for state.
“It’s senior year,” Pautler said. “It’s time to give it 100 percent and go all out.”
The Western Conference South Division tournament begins today (Friday, Feb. 3) and Saturday, Feb. 4 at Shorewood High School. Action in the 16-wrestler brackets starts at 4 p.m. today and 10 a.m. Saturday. The top five finishers in each weight class in the division tournament advance, with the top three guaranteed a spot at the Region 1 tournament at Jackson High School, Feb. 11-12.
The fourth-place finishers from the Western Conference North Division wrestle the fifth-place finishers from the Wesco South and fourth-place finishers from the South wrestler the fifth-place finishers from the North in pigtail matches Feb. 11 to determine who advances to regionals.
“(The divisional tournament) is really the only time of the season that matters,” Stannard said. “It’s what I’ve been preparing for my entire time wrestling.”
Against Shorewood, some of the younger wrestlers stepped up for Edmonds-Woodway. Freshman Dane Bratz wrestled up a weight class at 125 pounds and pinned Shorewood freshman Alan Bruton at the 3 minute, 53-second mark of the match. E-W freshman David Kim pinned Shorewood freshman Brad Steuby 3:18 into the 119-pound match. E-W sophomore Matthew Toma pinned Shorewood senior Richie Castellanos with 40 seconds gone in the 130-pound match.
Shorewood sophomore Matt Jensen notched the T-birds’ first win of the meet, a 4-0 decision over E-W’s Bradley Alfi in the 135-pound match.
E-W junior Brian Harkins pinned Shorewood sophomore Nathan Cook in the 140-pound match and E-W junior Adrian Siers followed with a pin of Shorewood sophomore Amanuel Yihdego.
Shorewood senior Mitch Zemanek scored a 6-0 decision over E-W junior David Alfi in the 152-pound match.
Shorewood’s Tim Hester, wrestling at 171 pounds, pinned Edmonds-Woodway freshman Jack Rubenkonig at the 5:01 mark. Hester celebrated his 16th birthday by improving his record to 23-3. He earned the only pin of the evening for the T-birds.
“My season was awesome,” said Hester whose goal is to place at state.
In the final match of the night, the 103-pound bout, Shorewood freshman Carl Berenson hung on to beat E-W freshman Sandy Nguyen, 4-2.
With several wrestlers busy studying for finals and finishing school projects, Shorewood was short-handed, head coach Arnie Moreno said.
Heavyweight Daniel Nelson sat out because of a skin infection, but he’s expected back for the divisional tournament. The Thunderbirds forfeited the 112-pound, 189-pound and 215-pound matches.
Edmonds-Woodway finished 3-6 in the Western Conference South Division and 3-8 overall. Shorewood fell to 2-7 in the league and 5-10 overall.
