SHORELINE — His teammates call him Superman.
It probably hasn’t been tested whether or not Edmonds-Woodway’s Alec Fellows can stop bullets, but the Warrior junior can certainly run and jump in ways that astound those that watch him on the track.
Fellows, a multi-event athlete, took the 23rd Annual Shoreline Track and Field Invite by storm on May 1, posting the best performance by a Snohomish County athlete in one of the state’s biggest annual track meets, which featured athletes from more than 50 Washington high schools.
The biggest feather in Fellows’ cap Saturday was certainly his win in the 110-meter hurdles, which he finished in 14.43 seconds.
“We expected him to do well but the win was very nice,” 12th-year E-W Coach Rick Fillman said. “He had a great race. I’ve never seen him get off the hurdle that quick before.”
Not only did Fellows break his own school record in the event, but it was the first time any Warrior captured first at this invite since Fillman has been at Edmonds-Woodway.
But the prelims and the finals of the hurdles did not take up Fellows’ entire day, which spanned more than seven hours at Shoreline Stadium. Fellows also was the top county finisher (fifth place) in the 200 meter run, which he completed in 22.58 seconds after qualifying for the finals in 22.35. In between the two runs, he posted a high jump of 6-feet, which was good for eighth place.
South Whidbey’s Will Hallberg captured the long jump, clearing 21 feet, 4 inches as the only other area event champion. Even more amazing is the fact that E-W’s Fellows, who had jumped 23 feet in competition previously, may have taken that event as well if it didn’t conflict with the 200, which he had only attempted once before in competition.
Fellows is being recruited by colleges to participate in the decathlon, which is not a WIAA sanctioned event. He is looking forward to the high school decathlon meet held at Lake Stevens one week after the official WIAA track championships, held Memorial Day weekend. A year ago he finished sixth in the decathlon.
