While visiting the 49th annual Edmonds Arts Festival this weekend, make sure to check out the juried junior art exhibit, which will showcase young artists from kindergarten through 12th grades.

Art was selected from public, private and home-schooled students within the boundaries of the Edmonds School District.

Ashley Kamacho, a senior at Mountlake Terrace High School, is this year’s junior poster artist. She received a $250 award and her drawing, titled “Faith and Sweet Pea,” will displayed in the junior art exhibit and offered for sale in the festival store.

Alexandra Russell, a senior at Lynnwood High School, was chosen as the recipient of the Pederson Award, a $150 honorary award given to a high school senior who shows exemplary dedication to visual arts plus commitment to their community in volunteer service.

In addition, 20 students were chosen out of thousands of entries as the top 20 junior artists, all of which received a $50 award, and 100 students were chosen as honorable mention.

“This year the work is the best I have ever seen in the junior exhibit,” said coordinator Laurie Piper. “The work has definitely advanced even at the younger levels and the older students are producing work that is amazing.”

The Edmonds Arts Festival opens Friday, June 16 and continues Saturday, June 17 and Sunday, June 18, at the Frances Anderson Center at 700 Main Street in Edmonds.
