MOUNTLAKE TERRACE
Like most basketball coaches, Wayne Edwards likes to remind his team how important it is to play a full 32 minutes.
But, if his Edmonds-Woodway girls can get it accomplished in less than that, he’ll take it every time.
On Dec. 21, the Warriors did just that. They jumped out to a 13-point lead at the end of the first period, which served them well in the rest of a 57-37 defeat of Mountlake Terrace.
“The last two games, we’ve really come out strong,” said Edwards, whose team moved to 4-4 overall. “We’re getting better. It’s a work in progress.”
Erin Lauber, a senior post, led Edmonds-Woodway with 14 points. Junior guard Jennifer Singh added 13 and junior forward Abby Butler had 11.
The Warriors’ stellar first quarter included a pair of 3-point field goals from Singh and eight points by Lauber down low. They scored the first seven points of the contest and, thanks to another 9-0 run to end the period, were in full command early at 20-7.
Mountlake Terrace did make a small comeback, but the initial gap proved to be too much. The Hawks scored the final six points of the half to cut the deficit to 26-16, then got back-to-back layups from Katy Hinson to get within six.
Edmonds-Woodway responded coolly, ripping off an 11-2 run to regain control. A Singh 3-pointer started it and a layup by Ashley Albertson ended it, making the score 37-22.
It was easy going from there on out for the Warriors, who never led by less than 10 the rest of the way.
“The kids are really gutting it out right now. They want it bad,” Edwards said. “They’re working really hard to try and take a step at a time in all aspects of the game.”
Edmonds-Woodway took a large step in rebounding Friday. The Warriors pulled down 10 more boards than Mountlake Terrace and used many of them for second-chance points to build their lead. Edmonds-Woodway had 10 points off putbacks in their explosive first quarter.
The Warriors’ rebounding gap was much more significant, until the final minutes when the outcome was decided.
“We controlled the boards tonight, but there were also some boards we needed to get that we didn’t get,” Edwards said. “We’ve been beaten on the boards. The other night we won, but were outrebounded. But we’ve been working hard in practice on a lot of rebounding drills and it seems to be working out for us.”
Hinson finished with 13 points as the only Mountlake Terrace player in double figures. Christina Ramirez also had seven.
