The news that Kathy Knutson, a much-loved teacher at Mill Creek Elementary, may be moved to a different school has understandably riled a few parents.
Knutson, who has taught the highly capable program at the elementary school since 1983, may have to change schools as part of the Everett School District’s attempt to close a $3.8 million shortfall.
Parents spoke in Knutson’s behalf at a recent school board meeting.
“I don’t know how you can make this decision to pull her out of the program,” said Kara Moore, whose daughters have been or are in Knutson’s class.
We’re glad that these moms and dads are taking an active role in their children’s education, and for taking the time to attend the afternoon school board meeting.
But at the same time, it’s important to keep the matter in perspective. Knutson isn’t being laid off. As hard as this might be on her students and on Knutson herself, at the end of the day she still has a job. Many people in Snohomish County – and across the entire country – don’t.
Let’s be sure to support those teachers and staff members in the school district who may not have a job this fall.
