March 18 marks the beginning of the ninth year of monthly Third Thursday Art Walks in downtown Edmonds. The Walk has become one of the largest in the state, boasting upwards of 40 locations hosting artists in a single evening, as well as live music, art demonstrations, and samplings of local food and wine.

In 2009, 580 artists got an opportunity to present their art to the hundreds of art patrons who attend the Third Thursday Art Walk each month. In addition, 38 groups played live music, and 10 authors/illustrators were showcased with book signings and readings. In the summer months, nearly 700 people attend the event.

The Art Walk was launched in March 2000 by Manya Schilperoort and Jeff Stilwell, owners of Manya Vee Selects in downtown Edmonds. “In the beginning, it was a difficult task to convince merchants to participate — especially if their business didn’t have any connection to art or artists,” Schilperoort said. “It is now a wonderful combination of established and emerging artists who show their work at traditional art galleries, as well as nontraditional venues.”

March’s Art Walk features live music and demonstrations, including the Palindroma Trio at Fabric of Life and watercolor painting at Autumns’ Framing and at Aria Studio Gallery, which also hosts new watercolor paintings by Joan Archer and photography from Leah Goodwin’s travels.
