Edmonds City Councilman Michael Plunkett’s resignation will be effective June 4.
Plunkett made the resignation official in a note to fellow council members Thursday morning.
The other six council members will seek applicants to replace Plunkett and set a schedule for applications and interviews.
Council President Strom Peterson said Friday that he expects the application process to start next week. He said that city staff members have begun working to update and set up an online application form, adding “I will send out a proposed schedule about the process next week.”
He added that the council will take applications and hold interviews before the position is vacant, but will not appoint until the vacancy is effective. He said that he expects the council to make the appointment June 5.
The person that the council appoints will fill the position through certification of the 2013 election.
Plunkett said that the resignation is “due to changes in my personal life.”
Plunkett, who won election to the council in 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2009, is the only current member of the council who has served six years or more.
His departure will make Peterson the senior member of the council. The council appointed Peterson in early 2009 to fill a vacancy. He won election to a full term later that year.
Councilwomen Diane Buckshnis and Lora Petso joined the council by appointment in 2010 and won full four-year terms in the 2011 election.
