If defense wins championships, the Edmonds hockey team is on the right path.
Three games into the season, the Warriors have given up just one goal and a sweep last weekend moved the club into the top spot in the standings.
The Warriors finished up a strong weekend with a 12-2 victory over Bainbridge on April 15. With a flurry of three goals early in the second period the Warriors grabbed the lead. Goalie Parker Mrozek recorded his second win and improved the team’s league-leading goals against average to 1.00 per game.
James Walker scored five goals, while Robby Bissett, Luke Nichols, and Katy Walker each added two. After giving up two early goals, the Edmonds’ defense clamped down on Bainbridge’s Kris Kushnirek and reduced any scoring chances to long distance shots.
Edmonds beat Marysville 8-0 on April 14. Edmonds scored four goals in the opening period and limited the Tomahawks to just three shots.
Jacob Mrozek led the way with two first period goals and later added three assists. Ten different players made their way onto the score sheet while goalie Tyler Schorzman posted the shutout. Edmonds scored two power play goals and killed all eight chances for Marysville.
Edmonds meets Meadowdale at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at OlympicView Arena.
Edmonds opened the Western Washington high school season with a 3-1 victory over Monroe on April 8.
Seniors Devon Miller and Cameron Carter each contributed first period goals that put the Bearcats in a hole that they could not escape. Continuous pressure throughout the opening period and a strong defensive effort limited Monroe to just 18 shots for the entire game.
The Warriors look to improve upon last season’s performance that saw them eliminated in the opening round of playoffs. Led by a strong group of upperclassmen (six seniors and seven juniors), Edmonds should be a strong contender for league and possibly state honors. Head coach Wes Noon is in his fourth year and has seen this group of players develop since their freshman year.
Senior captain James Walker leads a group of defensemen that have a combined 11 years of varsity experience. Goaltending will be a strength of this squad with Parker Mrozek and Tyler Schorzman splitting the duties. Up front, last season’s top scorers all return, led by junior Robby Bissett and seniors Miller, Walker and Nichols.
